Saying hello from the lonnings of Cumbria
« on: 16:57:35, 22/02/20 »
Greetings - I'm a keen walker and writer from Cumbria where I've lived since 2005 (the wife was brought up here). I was quickly enchanted by the Lake District of course but more so by 'real' Cumbria with its network of lonnings, trods, corpse roads and other delightful names for footpaths. I love walking the paths but also enjoy researching the history of them and any legends or folklore about the paths. Looking forward to sharing notes with fellow WalkingForum folk.

Hello and welcome from another new Cumbrian member. I had not heard of a lonning before we moved here 3 years ago. We have lots of lonnings to wander along in the Eden Valley which make for very pleasant walking especially at the moment as our local fells are a bog fest.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I decided to google lonning and discovered this

which I then realised was written by you.

This side of the border we have some minor roads linking main roads which are called 'loanings'; I assume it's the same thing
Not all those who wander are lost

Thank you for the welcomes! Lonnings are just one type of path in Cumbria and I suspect if members of this forum all listed the local names for their paths we'd have a very long but fascinating list!

I know two lonnings near Cockermouth that I've walked. Seacross and Green. They are lovely paths.

Yes, it is lonnen in the north east, I walked plenty of them when I lived over there  :)
