Recommended routes in Langdales this weekend?
« on: 20:47:35, 22/11/16 »
Off to Elterwater this weekend and according to Instagram photos the snow's come in, at least above about 400m. I know the Langdale valleys pretty well and have walked just about everything - but not in winter conditions. So any recommendations of which routes/mountains are a good idea and which a bit trickier for navigation (or otherwise) in the snow? I'm assuming that paths mostly won't be visible.

We'll have microspikes & poles but not full ice axe / crampons. Weather forecast is good: dry and mostly clear. Should be glorious!

Cheers

Up the band from Stool End would probably be a safe option. You could assess on the way up and then go either Bowfell or Crinkle crags should you feel comfortable.

If snow is too much of an obstacle lower level back up routes would be: Blea Rigg, Silver How, Loughrigg fell and Lingmoor fell from the doorstep. Further afield, Holme fell and Black fell. Higher level routes would be Langdale Pikes, Blisco, Crinkles and Bowfell. Valley walks would be around Lingmoor fell taking in both Langdale valleys including Blea tarn.
