Weather in the Western and Northern Highlands.

Does anyone have any information as to how good, or bad, the conditions are for walking at the moment?
Regards,

Shaun.

Hi Shaun,(and Phil!)
The snow has retreated to the high corries over the past couple of weeks but there's supposedly more on the way.

Recently the summit conditions have been windy with poor visibility, some snow still about and pretty deep in places. On the rare occassions that the freezing level has dropped low enough then the wet snowpack has frozen very hard. But mostly it's been a case of trying to avoid falling down holes :(

Yesterday it snowed down to about 500m but that quickly melted. As of tonight the temperature has noticeably dropped and winds are getting up. We've been promised a middling to large dump of snow on the hills for tommorrow and even a frost which together with high S-SW winds might give a considerable avalanche risk in N to E facing corries and gullies for a a few days. Set to be cold with wintry showers for the rest of the week. I haven't seen the tops for more than 5 minutes for about a week.

I'm hoping that by the end of the week things will have settled a bit and we have a return to some good winter conditions, but it's a case of watch this space :)

Well it snowed down to about 200m last night. Mainly wet stuff but accumulatingon the hills. Now it's kinda sleety with snow line rising to about 350m. Avalanche risk is category 4 (high) and more wintry weather expected throughout the week.
