I must be missing something as it makes no difference if I copy and paste, or manually type in.

You are enclosing both links to the image in URL tags. An image should be enclosed in IMG tags.

Example:

[IMG]https://i.postimg.cc/Pr4DFzYj/The-Loe.jpg[/IMG]

Just a guess, were you posting the direct link https://i.postimg.cc/fR1V5wrD/The-Loe.jpg rather than the hotlink for forums further down the page (I tried copying and pasting the url to show the difference but it kept coming up with a picture)

Thanks to Steamy Tea ninthace , Whitstable Dave I think I have got it now .
I remember sitting in class totally confused by Maths and a teacher saying if anyone doesn't understand just say ,..unfortunately we were all too scared to speak up and admit that we didn't have a clue as to what this strange language was ( in case we looked stupid). I failed Maths miserably.So thanks to you all for the great help hopefully I am able to post a picture .Never too old to learn they say.

No.  The screenshots I posted recently were *.png files.
