Title: What are your plans for 2017?
Post by: rural roamer on 13:19:50, 30/12/16
I don't think there's a thread on this yet so thought I would start one.  Having walked the Pennine Way this year, that was the biggie for us, so anything else now is probably going to be shorter and hopefully easier. Though being much nearer 60 now and the aches and pains I seem to be suffering more from, that's probably a good thing!

We were considering Offa's Dyke but having realised neither of us have done any of the national 3 peaks we are thinking of doing those instead but over 3 separate holidays.  But then it seems silly to go all the way up to Scotland just to do Ben Nevis so we might have to throw in the West Highland way.  And while we're over in Wales, well you get my drift.... Not sure if I can take that much holiday though.

Quite a few trips pencilled in for 2017 so far, walks from my youth that I'm revisiting amongst others.  On the to do list - Lyke Wake Walk West to East crossing, The National Three Peaks, Blencathra via Sharp Edge,  Helvelyn via Striding Edge, more of Hadrian's Wall  and am also toying with the idea of the Northumbrian version of the Three peaks.

Well this time last year I was putting in a similar thread that I was off on the Penine Way but that never happened due to my son being unwell. Having hardly walked at all this year I aim to do a bit more in 2017 and hopefully get up to the Lakes and bag a few more Wainwrights if my boy is up to it.

Nothing epic.

Will aim to do "Beast of Bolsolver" sometime in 2017 (18 miles, so will need to build up from 6 to 10 milers done this year), go to Shropshire (based on Shrewsbury) a few times, and do walks in Hope Valley ( Edale, Bamford, Hathersage, Grindleford area) most weeks.

Might just throw in a trip to either Austria or Switzerland too, if things go according to plan 8)

Skye for a week.  Backpack Pennine Journey circular from Settle which should be a couple of weeks.  Then long weekends here and there as they arise .

My main goal, for this forthcoming year, is to stay in good health, and with luck, drive the lovely North Coast 500 route.
Ive done most of the route by touring coach, but one always wants to stop off at every given opportunity, for the amazing views, and photo opportunities.
I will never forget my first view towards Suilven, even though the weather was not superb, the scenery was amongst the finest Ive seen in the UK.
Its a long trek north, but definitely worth going back  to explore further.

I don't usually admit my plans for the new walking year although I have generally thought about it a bit. But maybe if I state what I'm aiming for in 2017 that will increase the incentive to do it! So I am planning to finish off the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and the North Downs Way (both half done!) I'm hoping to have enough holiday left to spend a week in the Dark Peak, having had a really great time there during 2016.  And if I manage all that I should be able to complete the Viewranger 250 mile challenge in 2017, having failed this year.  Oh yes, I also want to visit some of the new stretches of the England Coast Path...... I had better stop there, I seem to be getting carried away.

My main aim is simply to do lots of walking.  I've planned many new walks in Sussex, a lot of them in the High Weald and the Wealden Greensand.  Where to go further afield I haven't decided yet!

My plans include c2c in April/May with mountaingirl, The Grand canyon, hike down and back up again, possibly in early March,  start the swcp with my other half, though I imagine it will take us a few years of intermittent effort, , I have a brecon beaconstrip already booked and hope to join in with other group meet ups from here. Kinda want to do a walk in France too, maybe join an organised trip for something (TMB, perhaps)

Another 1000 miles. My blog readers want to do it and they need me to bully them into getting off their backsides. Can't let them down. I will be doing other walks, a few more than 2017 because I don't have the ties of a dog any more. Will make up plans as and when the time comes. I don't do much advance planning.

My main aim is to still be here for 2018 O0 O0

100% Confidence in you there O0

Got to carry over my 2 outstanding goals from 2016

Wild Camping
Snowdon Horseshoe (Reverse)

And new for 2017

Aonach Eagach in Winter Conditions (this Winter)
Striding/Swirral Edge in Winter Conditions (this Winter)
Tryfan/Bristley Ridge in Winter Conditions (this Winter)
Add another 30 or so Wainwrights to my tally (currently 98)
Do some overseas walks again (Tenerife Booked for Jan/thinking of going to Crete in May)
Do the Yorkshire 3 Peaks
Sunset/Sunrise Walk (Snowdon in June/July)

Probably lots more but that's what immediately springs to mind.

Having finally climbed Snowdon this year, I'd like to get up Devil's Kitchen in 2017. I went part way up it on the same school trip as we didn't climb Snowdon on because of the poor weather conditions. Will hopefully have my eldest with me after he got the scrambling bug on the Nantlle Ridge.

Would also like to complete the Brecon Beacons National Park Hewitts and Nuttalls. It should only take 3 more walks but I want to include my youngest (he's done all the Hewitts but not the Nuttalls so far) and he is getting more resistant to hill walking. Too slow for him. Someone has sneakily promoted another peak to a Nuttall in the last couple of months but fortunately we can nab it on the Beacons Horseshoe from the Neuadd reservoir, which I'm planning to be our completion walk.

I'm carrying on with my County Bagging Project.  Unfortunately, I've "bagged" all the Counties surrounding me now which are do-able in a day there and back walk so that means I'll just have to have more holidays to get to the ones further afield.... shame that  :D

Nothing at all as its impossible to get away at the moment.I might take on the 1000 mile challenge and try and make the distance doing local walks.Mileage in the past year was pathetic, lowest its been for 25 years as there was no real incentive to get out there and do something.

Two possibles on the list, though no pressure to achieve them in 2017.

Complete the Kennet on Avon Canal with MrsG.  We still have Devises to Reading to walk and I have shelled out much pennies on the OS map, so would be nice to finish that off this year.

Plus walk the Snowdon Horseshoe with my son.

I've got a bucket list for 2017. Eight walks in Wales and a similar number in the Peak District as well as a week in the Mourne Mountains.

Having reached the 'veteran' stage I'm determined to complete the list but also to have fun as I go. More importantly, it's time to give up the bl**dy cigarettes starting at midnight. That should give me an extra £2k a year to spend on travel and walking.

If it all works I could find myself walking in areas I've never visited before.

One for he following, maybe two if other commitments permit:

Thames Path
Macmillan Way
Wessex Ridgeway
Heart of England way
Pennine Bridleway
Monarch's Way Book 1
Plus a number of short (30m) local paths

All as through walks backpacking, but those over 200m may be split in two as my partner does not like me being away for more than 2 weeks at a time.

As I'll be 67 when I start any of them, it's beginning to look like a bucket list

After a bit of a quieter year in some ways, I'd like to think 2017 might offer up a bit more opportunity. Subject to dates being confirmed, in the pipeline are Austria, Norfolk Coast Path (again), more of the Camino in France and possibly Armenia or Georgia.

That's if everything comes together!  :D

Of the 526 hills above 500m in the Southern Uplands I now have only 8 remaining to visit; first priority for 2017 is to finish this long-standing target, then to mop up the remaining lower Marilyns in the same area.

After a bit of mulling this is what I have come up with

- walk 1000 miles again
- average 8000 steps per day
- walk at least one Munro when we are in Knoydart
- explore the walking in areas closer to where I live eg Malvern Hills; Shropshire; Forest of Dean;
- Further afield - become familiar with the Brecon Beacons; maybe even venture to N Wales
- edited to add walks from my Howgills book that son got me for my birthday. I've a bit of a hankering for the Mallerstang walk.

Right, I'd better get moving on goal 2 - only managed 391 steps so far today. It would help if I got up!!

Happy New Year all and good luck with your walking goals.

Trying as much as possible to get out each weekend probably looking at more routes in the Peak District and East Lancs.  Planning to walk the West Highland Way late June which at 96 miles should be a bit easier than the C2C which I completed last year.
Title: Re: What are your plans for 2017?
Post by: NorthernTom on 17:01:10, 02/01/17
As others have said the main aim is to get out as much as possible, with an aim of at least once a week.

Other 'bigger' plans so far are:
-Complete Heart of England Way (Cannock Chase to Lichfield completed already)
-Wolds Way in spring/summer with my Dad
-Minimum two Lake District Camping Trips (including the new Ullswater Way and a few Wainwrights)
-North Worcestershire Path & Worcestershire Way
-Headland Way from Bridlington to Filey
-Yorkshire 3 Peaks
-Help my Grandpa get up Blencathra one last time!

It would also be great to meet some new people along the way, so if anyone has any recommendations for local group walks/walking groups, please feel free to share!  :)

It is an axiom of military doctrine that no plan survives first contact with the enemy so I don't intend to make any.

Actually that is untrue as Mrs Ninthace has pointed out - whenever I plan to do anything I always have a plan A with plans B,C & D just in case and usually I replan as the situation develops.  The final fall back plan for any endeavor in our household is referred to as the "Church Hall if wet" plan

Sarah ..... don't know the route in Mallerstang in your new book, but it is certainly a worthwhile walk, at its longest a marathon length effort.  The stone statues are unique. Used to be a café at the halfway road crossing.

Well I failed on several counts. We did finish the NDW but not the PCP (although we had a great few days walking from Fishguard to St. Dogmaels and another great week in the Peak District).  But, just like last year, I haven't even completed the ViewRanger 400km challenge yet.  Still a few weeks to go so I might just manage this paltry achievement  :(

My New Year Resolution is to admit to no more plans....

I haven't been walking or backpacking for quite some years so next year I plan to get back to doing both. I live in Devon now so time to start exploring. Did an 8 mile walk on Dartmoor with one of the dogs last week which was a great way to start back.

Currently sorting through my backpacking gear and changing things out from when I walked as a couple to now walking solo. My much loved Terra Nova Ultra Quasar is now 20 years old and too heavy for one so a Tarptent Scarp 1 is on order.

After first reading about the early TGO Challenges as a teenager and thinking 'that looks like fun' I'm now tentatively considering trying to enter for 2019. I have a bit of training to do ahead of me next year then.

Also, I joined this and couple of other online forum/resources to find likeminded folk, pick brains and perhaps even find a few folks to meet occasionally for some company while walking.

Me  O0  I went up to Devil's Kitchen and across Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach with my eldest son in August and the boys and I completed the Brecon Beacons National Park 2000 footers last weekend.

I'm not sure I want to carry on hill-bagging particularly, I thought it would be a good way of trying out different walks and it is, but it also adds a bit of pressure to something that's meant to be relaxing. I'd like to do some more scrambling with my eldest before he gets fed up with how slow I am. It would be good to visit some of the other mountain ranges in Wales - so far apart from the four in the Brecon Beacons National Park I've walked/scrambled in the Hebog mountains, the Glyderau and on Snowdon - but I do not want to get drawn into trying to visit every last peak however dull. Maybe I could venture into some non-Welsh mountains, would be good to return to the Lake District (boys were too young for much walking last time we were there) and at some point I want to tackle Ben Nevis, by the CMD arete if I can try out something easier like Striding Edge first. Also following the success of our Barmouth-Fairbourne Walk, I'd like to try out some more non-mountain walking, instead of feeling like I should head to a summit every time. Lots of options, let's see what 2018 brings.

Post by: adalard on 09:06:40, 14/11/17
I couldn't remember whether I posted to this or not - seems like I didn't.  ::)

Most of my walking has been in the Peak District this year and while I've covered several areas I hadn't walked before, these walks have been plotted at the last minute rather than been long-held "to do" ones. Shropshire has been a real discovery for me in 2017 but that was something that only really occurred to me to explore during the course of this year so it wouldn't have made this thread even if I had posted at the start.

I did do one walk which I'd been wanting to do since summer 2016 and that was a traverse of the Carneddau from the Ogwen Valley to Llanfairfechan. That was everything I hoped it would be, a fantastic (and LONG!) day. Saw lots of the ponies which was a real treat.

I also did Tryfan for the first time. That was a mountain I'd always wanted to climb but it wasn't exactly planned - I ended up doing it after abandoning my first attempt of the Carneddau traverse due to low cloud. Seemed rather pointless to traipse across them in mist and the Glyderau were relatively cloud-free.

Those were my only two visits to Wales and I've only had one visit to the Lakes this year. Bit disappointing but circumstances get in the way sometimes, I guess, and I've still had lots of great walking locally.

To visit the Shetland Islands, but it looks like that will have to happen in 2018.
Ive visited all the Outer Hebridean islands, most of the Inner Herbride's, as well as Orkney, in the NE.
I still have not visited the Shetlands, so that's my next trip north.

Well my plans for 2017 were more or less achieved and I completed the West Highland Way in July. Unfortunately at the beginning of October, whilst walking in North Wales, I had another suspected 'cardiac' incident and have now been 'grounded' by my GP and Consultant whilst further tests are carried out. Still hope to walk the C2C again next year but now it all depends on the outcome of the tests.  So .....frustrating!

Well it was a turbulent and disrupted year in many ways.  However we managed to complete the NCP again, and also did Austria and more of the Camino in France. Mind you they were probably booked by then anyway!  :D

Armenia and Georgia didn't happen, but to compensate we had long weekends in Poland and Montenegro, and also a week in Bulgaria, so all in all out was a great year!

I'm hoping that next year will be kerfuffle free and we can have an even better year. But more on that in due course!  ;)

Well, I went to Anglesey in April and Whitby in September, so did the coastal walking as planned.
I've arranged and led lots of walks for our walking group this year and although they were all in the Peaks, I've enjoyed designing completely new routes.
I didn't make Austria/Switzerland.....but I did spend 2 weeks on Skopelos, my first ever trip to Greece!
Really enjoyed it and managed to find a few good walks on the island too! 8)

Also on my agenda (but not mentioned above) was to walk 1000 miles again.  I hit my target back in September, so the miles I've done since and have yet to do are all a bonus! :D

I assume you mean 2018? For me, I want to hike the GR131 across a couple of the Canary Islands before March. I then am in a real quandary, the GR20, GR11, the GR5, I just muddle myself up but I will work it out I'm sure. I fancy some UK walks up to the end of June, Brecon Beacons, up to the Lakes again, The Bob 'whathisname' Round looks interesting and of course as its 2018 I might go to Ypres on November 10th/11th? Last but not least I would also like to take a few days to walk from Falaise to Caen through the Swiss Normandy area, just the place for me to indulge myself in food and wine!

Sorry I was fooled by 'what are your plans FOR 2017'. I walked less this year mainly because my son was married in July and it disrupted the plans I had made earlier in the year. However I did managed to walk the GR4 France from Grasse to Manosque in May. The highlight of the trip was the Grand Canyon do Verdun, really stunning. Great food and wine! I hiked the Glendys Way and the Pennine Journey (I enjoyed it more than the Pennine Way in fact) and also did a few short hikes in the Lakes and Kent as well.

Well I managed to do at least 3 of the above, Blencathra, LWW West to East and some more of Hadrian's Wall.  Have had some fantastic days out on the fells, slowly bringing my total of Wainrights up to 24.  More Wainwright's planned for next year, definately the National 3 Peaks and a Winter crossing of the LWW.  Out of the walks "planned" for this year was most disappointed that Helvellyn didn't happen, unforeseen circumstances put paid to two planned visits and a couple of Storms put paid to another two, there's always next year....

My main aim is simply to do lots of walking.  I've planned many new walks in Sussex, a lot of them in the High Weald and the Wealden Greensand.  Where to go further afield I haven't decided yet!

Well, I succeeded in doing lots of walking. I did a lot of new walks in Sussex, among them many in the High Weald and a few in the Wealden Greensand. Didn't get further afield though!

As new walkers we hope to climb roseberry topping first which is a local landmark in Teesside we are wanting to do the Cleveland way over 2 weeks but I want to do it using a tent she doesn't  and I don't think it' practical in a tourer caravan and too expensive using b&bs. And I would like to continue walking holiday around the coast
