[Trip Report] - Stanage Edge and Burbage Rocks
« on: 21:29:47, 24/04/06 »
MAP: Dark Peak. O.S. 1:25,000.
Start: Car Park, 227844.
Distance:  8.5 miles.
Weather:   Warm, sunny and cloudy, humid.
Persons:    Chris and Martin.

Description:

From the car, we walked up the rough road heading east onto the edge. The route was obvious and relatively easy. Following the edge for about two miles we then descended through an outcrop to cross the Ringinglow Road. We walked up the road until we crossed the bridge and immediately picked up a well-worn path below Burbage Rocks. The path heads South until a turning west, downhill, skirts a plantation. We crossed the ford and ascended the steep slope, keeping Earth Work on our left. At the brow of the hill we headed for the north-west corner of the sheepfold on Hathersage Moor. (The fold used to house a rain gauge, perhaps in Victorian times, but is no longer there.) The track then descends to cross the main road and continues through the conservation meadows of Mitchell Farm. A steep incline then brought us on to another main road. Head down the road and pick up the right of way through Toothill Farm. Once past the farm the path led to the outskirts of Hathersage, turning sharply to northwest along a fence towards Brookfield Manor. From here the path passes Bronte Cottage (which didn’t look “Bronte-esque”, or cottage-like) and across a pleasant meadow. The path then leads through a small wood to Green’s House, and along to the car by the edge of Dennis Knoll.

This walk provided some excellent scenery and incorporated some stunning views. There were thousands of people out climbing on the edges and the landscape was a wash with “fell-wear”. The weather was kind to us, with very little rain and we only “cagged” up once or twice.

This would be a wonderful winter walk, especially in the snow!

MD.

To make a longer walk and include some nice forest sections you could link up with this one:
