A couple more sunsets
« on: 22:46:39, 19/05/10 »
Hi all,

Not quite sure what to make of these so critique me as much as you like :)

First off, I went to Alport Height, near Matlock, Derbyshire to check out a location I had recommended to me to see what it would be like for a sunset. Definitely not much to go on and more than likely why I couldn't find many photos but I had a bash all the same. The gritstone block has been quarried and moved to the location:

The next day I went a walk up Kinder Scout to explore the Western Edges with Radder, while we enjoyed what we did get to see, like a tool I managed to lose my little point and shoot on the way and while almost being tempted to leave it knowing it was insured and stay for the sunset, common sense prevailed and we back tracked 2 miles and somehow found it! So here are a couple of attempts I had, with no a lot of time :(

Thanks for looking, please say what you feel as I don't know what to make of them.

Granty

Hi Granty.  Like the 1st, Love the 2nd, not sure about the 3rd.  It's still good, but I like it the least.  (They're all better than anything I've done)  O0

You'll never guess what??? I agree with Pete, the sunset in the 3rd one is lovely it's the landscape underneath that is a bit featureless (cant really hold you accountable for that though, can we??) although the bright lake is nice. I really like the first one and the sun and reflection in the second one (is that a starry filter?) thanks!! well done on finding the camera too...I would have gone back too, once on holiday my son dropped a 20 euro note, we walked back a mile through the town and found it in a gutter! Thanks for the pics!  :)
take it easy...but take it

Thank you for the responses - think I will ditch the third, it was the one I was least sure on. I preferred the second one myself too with the double sun (no filters, just high aperture if that means anything). I've always found Kinder a hard place to shoot as well. Maybe with more time and not losing stuff I'll do better!

Not a problem - I find criticism better than false praise, otherwise I'd never get anywhere or improve myself.

I felt right away they weren't my strongest work, but it's worth putting them up anyway as photography is so subjective.

You're right granty , if you ask your mates they will all say yeah its great, then when you come to the real world you often get a kick in the teeth  :(   Found that with songs weve written  ;)   Good honest criticism helps us grow better, but is harder to take innit?  :(

Keep them photos comin - get up to the lakes one friday  ;)

Once I've sold my car I can concentrate on getting to the Lakes/Wales a lot more often, where I'm hoping I'll be able to progress myself further.

You're pictures are good, saw some others in another thread, do you edit them quite heavily in Photoshop afterwards?  Some look very similar to this pseudo HDR effect I see a lot at the moment.

No - don't touch HDR with a bargepole :) (That's a lie I tried it last night with alport stone because I was having a mare with it being exposed wrongly which I couldn't get around in camera but I didnt like it). I only use lightroom to edit my photos, in which I only boost saturation, vibrance, contrast and blacks mainly. Oh I also use the very handy ND grad filter until I buy some proper ones. This is all essential when shooting RAW anyway which tends to come out flatter than when shooting JPG. I try my best to not over do it and try and reproduce what I saw through the viewfinder.

Hope that helps.

Lovely pics. Best one of Kinder Res I've seen for a ages, and from a good, different viewpoint. Was the white shooters hut above the res visible? Someones tried to burn it down a couple of times and someone reckons its a cinder now
