Thanks Beefy - it was a magical spot; my best solo wild camp yet.

For wild camping, I cannot recommend the Cairngorms strongly enough. I'm already thinking about future trips.

It was good that you missed the thunderstorms. There was a long line working their way up the east of Scotland. I assume that the must have mostly passed to the east of the Cairngorms.

I have wild camped above 1400 metres before, but that was not the same as your camp, as it was in an Alpine valley and I could get a beer by walking a few km into a nearby village. However, the washing facilities consisted of a fast flowing glacial stream, which was freezing.

Yes, it's a very different game in the Alps. The commercial campsite that I stayed at in (ahem) 1984 in the floor of the beautiful Valsavarenche valley near Aosta was 1600m above sea level.

Love camping high, the wells of Dee are a favourite spot. High on the South Sheil ridge is another.

Did a six month detachment with the Italian Alpini Regiment in Aosta in1983, fantastic area.

The Cairngorms are an absolute 'must' for really wild camping.

By the way, you're a dead-ringer (albeit slightly hairier) for my next door neighbour  :o

I had my eye on the Wells of Dee as a potential pitch, but I couldn't resist trying Loch Coire an Lochain. Something for another trip - perhaps one incorporating Cairn Toul.
