Scotland Weather
« on: 09:02:06, 27/08/19 »
Every so often I check my local weather (N. Wales) on my phone app and it shows (as today) local weather as being fine for a day or two and then a forecast of a week of rain and grot.
I am trying to plan a trip to the Cairngorms but when I check the forecast I get much the same. "Today" will be showing nice sunny weather whilst the end of the week/early next week indicating rain and cloud etc.Is there anyone on the forum local to the Cairngorms who can tell me if I'm getting an accurate picture. Thanks

Not quite sure what you're asking. I can confirm that its been a nice sunny morning here in Inverness, but it is already beginning to cloud over. I use the Met Office as my main source of weather info, and, as you say, they're forecasting wind and rain for Thurs / Fri, though more on the west coast than in the Cairngorms. I wouldn't say the weekend looks to bad at the moment, few showers and maybe a bit windy high up - but I can't predict the accuracy of their forecast any better than you can...

Thanks for that. I might just have to travel up and take a chance on in. If the weather is really bad I'll just stay low in the glens. :-\

In the last week I had windy weather on and off all the time. The forecasted night frosts never materialized most nights were around 8 - 10 degrees. Really glad I took my warmer, heavier sleeping bag, then. Only used my waterproofs once but they were on all day. Three sunny days, one of which didn't get windy until mid-afternoon. The remaining three days were overcast with quite light but squally showers. The wind strength varied from just annoying to rip your tent too shreds, I actually backed off climbing Ben Alder after being blown over twice. Camped inside a Spruce plantation one night to escape the wind. Another time I had to move my camp two miles down the glen to find some shelter. I stayed in two bothies and Loch Ossian YHA mainly to avoid the wind.

Hello,
I am looking out of my window towards the Western Cairngorms....Cloud level 750 metres...small amount of rain overnight...No wind here at 275 metres at the moment.
Have you looked at the MWIS forecasts for the next three days?...for Cairngorms and the Monadhliath hills.  These are forecasts given for the hill areas in GB.
You have just missed a few days of good sunny weather here in the Cairngorms.

Monday and Tuesday were indeed fine and great walking days. I camped last night at loch Etchachan. 3000ft, wind and rain all night, barely slept... such are the Cairngorms.

Ooh - would love to camp there - even in bad weather.

Any photos?

As said above, check MWIS site. Also check the mountain forecast on the met office site. It comes under specialist forecasts. Just click on it and choose the area.
