Thanks for all the suggestions. I opted for a pair of Mammuts in the end - purely because of doing TMB in August. Also, the kind shop offered to take them back if I didn't get on with them - so that kind of swung it for me  O0

I've got wide feet and find the Salomon Cosmics are very good, so another make worth looking at.

Well, the Mammuts failed my feet. Still pain. I am beginning to think that it might be the rigid sole. I will be trying a long walk tomorrow in my non-rigid soled boots and hope that the pain isn't there  >:(

Maybe, as Glyders suggested earlier, depending on your size you may need to look at mens boots as they are wider.

I tried the mens boots on, but the ankle area was too wide. My feet are very wide (at their widest) - an 'F' fitting, but my ankles are thin. We tried every combination yesterday.

Custom made boots perhaps ???   I forget the brand but there is I think a Yorkshire boot company that does them?

I think that is what might need to be done. Do you think that it is going to work out very expensive?

Ive seen Altbergs for between £100-£140 though some are more.  They do various widths so that might help you avoid the custom made option which I would guess costs a fair bit

Thanks Paulr - the problem that I have is that I don't know if they hurt until I have been walking in them for over an hour. In the house they don't hurt. Luckily the place where I bought the Mammuts agreed that I could take them for a walk across the moors yesterday and if they hurt then I could return them. However, I can't do that with each pair I buy - and now I am a little nervous of shelling out more for boots and end up with them hurting.

This is Alt berg.Custom made boots are very expensive as they take a cast of your feet and hand make both boots. No idea precisely how much but I knew someone who did it and got the impression it was upper hundreds.

Think you may need to consult a podiatrist (sp?) as your problem may be with your feet - depending on what kind of pain it is - and maybe not with the boots.

Going leftfield for a min,  Vivobarefoot now do some extremely light waterproof hiking boots (mine are 280g for the pair) but they are not for everyone - completely flat sole (no heel) and minimum cushioning.

I take the supplied 2mm insoles out to get improved groundfeel but I know Im in the minority here as most folks add cushioned insoles to their boots.

Yep, already done. Saw one Monday - luckily my feet are in good shape. It is purely the boot compressing my foot which is causing a movement that rubs on my nerve and then I feel the pain in the balls of my feet. That's a potted version. I'm wondering whether it is the rigid sole of the boots that aren't helping  ???

Sorry - I thought you wrote chiropodist earlier.  The question is if you walk in normal shoes, trainers etc without pain and they dont have rigid soles then you may be right in assuming its the rigity of the soles - if that the case then minimalist/barefoot shoes such as Vivobarefoot may be a solution or North Face hedghogs or similar.

Chavsports doing Vivos at silly prices at the mo - limited sizes left though.... http://www.sportsdirect.com/vivo?dsearch=cat  Amazon have them for £80
