Janet's Foss, Gordale Scar, Malham Tarn & Cove
« on: 19:03:02, 31/08/15 »
A shortish walk this Sunday:

Janets Foss

The entrance to Gordale Scar

The cliffs

Looking up at the waterfalls.  The higher one emerges through a hole in the rockface, the lower one can be climbed up without any difficulty

Malham Tarn with the outdoor centre opposite

Looking down into the valley of Watlowes, a dried river bed...

...which leads to the top of Malham Cove, a former waterfall.  Looking over the edge

and from below. Spot the rock climbers

Another view of the cove

Nice pictures Colin of one of mine and Mrs R's favourite walks, all the times we have been though we have never seen anyone climbing Malham cove  :(

Great pictures, thought you were lucky to get shots without people in them, then saw your last one.

Is that climbing or is it it pegging? ;)

Thanks Tracey & BWW.  I was out earlyish so was just ahead of the crowds until I reached the cove which is a very popular spot.   I had to Google 'pegging', it must be climbing 'cos its definitely not that!  ;D

I hate to think what google made of pegging, a term used in the 1960's by proper cragrats about those with an tendency to overuse iron ware.

Lovely photos. Brings back happy memories from many years ago. Did you climb the Goredale scar waterfall?
These boots are made for walking.... so long as the rest of my body agrees

Thanks, and yes! I did take some photos from inside the hidden valley but they didn't really do it justice.  Its an easy climb up and out of the valley.

Malham Cove is a great walk - popular - but one of the best up North in my humble opinion. I noticed the photos aren't showing anymore in the original post? Thought I'd share some photos of my best views from my walking trip incase anyone lands here and wants to see a few photos :-) You can see a full write-up here if your interested with lots more photos and map route http://stuarthodgson.blogspot.co.uk/2016/07/malham-cove-via-gordale-scar.html

Entering Gordale Scar:

About to tackle Gordale Scar via the waterfall :)

Now enroute to Malham Tarn:

Malham Tarn:

Heading to the top of Malham Cove

Soaking in the fine views on top of Malham Cove:

Malham Cove from ground level

Hope this helps with anyone thinking of doing this walk - if you don't fancy the scramble up the waterfall near Gordale Scar there is an alternative route besides it :-)

Thanks for sharing the pictures, Wildcamper - they're great. It's quite a while since I've been to Malham and you've whetted my appetite to get up there again soon.  O0
