Brand - QUECHUA
« on: 01:51:31, 04/04/11 »
I visited a Decathlon store recently and noticed loads of gear branded "QUECHUA". I haven't seen this brand in other leading outdoor shops and was wondering a) Is it Decathlon own brand? b) Is it any good?

Never heard of it personally. Googled it and it looks like it is part of that company's range. Maybe read reviews online also O0 .
The specialist sports clothing for running/decathlon/triathlon/etc seems to have a huge rotation of manufacturers. The named brands (i.e. Nike, Addidas, Puma) always seem to succeed although they are not always the better products. Its a shame that the general population take name brands as quality, when there is so much decent un-heard of equipment out there.
I had a pair of 'Etonic' specialist lightweight trainer many years ago and they were the dogs *******! Can't find the company anywhere now sigh :( . Best pair I ever had.

I did try to look for some reviews but could seemingly only find reviews about quechua tents! In saying that these were reviews were very good indeed so perhaps other quechua branded gear is just as good. I think maybe the way forward will be to buy some gear and review it myself!
I've always bought expensive branded items like North Face and Berghaus etc but really could do with spending a little less and as you rightly point out these big brands are not necessarily the better products.

I personally don't bother really with forums. I only use this one O0 . Its a good laugh at times, some good advice, some bad...but hey more heads are better than one. Great routes. Friendly. Met some good people. But best of all I get to talk rubbish about one of my passions ;D (I'm sure many will agree lol).

Quechua is, I believe, Decathalon's own brand. You see huge amounts of their stuff being used and worn on mainland Europe. From what I've seen, it's pretty good middle-of-the-range stuff.

Yes, Quechuoa -spelt that wrong - is the brand name for Decathlon a vast chain of French outdoor superstores, basically good quality but I suppose more aimed at French and alpine conditions - you have to pick carefully as regards design. Use to be one near Stockport.

I have quite a lot of quechua odds and ends, and saw lots of small tents while we were on hols last year. They are certainly good value, and have had no problem with any of it. I also have other decathlon own branded stuff - trainers, swimwear, running jacket etc.

I am a bit of a decathlon fan and always stock up when in france.

Ive seen this as well and wondered... In TKMaxx I bought a Summit 7 insulator jacket - apparent retail price £120.. TKMaxx price £40.. I needed a warm coat for winter (work mainly) and after buying hubby Rab Insulator armless thing.. THis looked very similar - but with arms...

Ive had it on all over winter and love it.. Much cheaper than the Rab and Mountain Equiptment alternatives and it is shower proof and keeps the wind off a treat...

So no, unknown brands arent always rubbish... Mind you perhaps Summit 7 is good.. but I couldnt find anything on a google search at that time...

I am in Decathlon quite regularly and the gear is as someone has said decent middle of the road kit but well priced. The tents are excellent, the running kit is good but i wouldnt buy the walking boots.

The best thing they do are any items marked 'raid' or '500'. This is kit tested and designed by Mountain Marathon teams sponsored by Decathlon and it is awesome for the money. I only ever wear their '500' range of walking and running socks, best ever. You can keep Smartwool and Bridgedale etc.

So pretty good overall you can buy with reasonable confidence.

Hi

I have got a largish 4 man Quechua tent, it is a bit tricky to put up but other than that has never let me down.  Very good value for the money.  This will be at least 3rd, maybe 4th year I will have used it for family holidays and kids' sleepovers in the backgarden etc and so far so good despite a good lot of use.

 :)
