September already and our June Hebridean trip is a fond memory - LONG days, SUNSHINE and fab scenery. Just a quick selection of photos to complete the record of our trip.
Harris is far more rugged, if not downright inhospitable, than the more southerly islands but of course has lots of exciting scenery for that. Crossing from Berneray north of N Uist, the southern coast looks amazing. On the far left is Chaipaval, a mere 1197ft high but right on the coast, and offering brilliant views.
And yes, from the summit you CAN see St Kilda! (clearer in the full sized photo - honest!!)
Great views along the western coast of the south peninsula too, along the Sound of Taransay (remember THAT island from Castaway 2000?)
... and along the southern coast, with the distant Red and Black Cuillin of Skye on the horizon.
A shelf full of Guillemot on the Shiant Isles, east of the main island.
'Twas a misty day on the Shiant trip - but very scenic.
We made a sortie to Lewis for a day and saw yet another facet of the Outer Isles. Wonderful sweeping views, and a super-rugged coast.
and you just need to get to Callanish as the coaches leave, to see the amazing standing stones looking brooding as they should!
The main mountain range is north of Tarbert on Harris, and of course includes Clisham on the right, the only Corbett in the outer isles.
Given the right weather, even Clisham can look benign!
North from Clisham over the wide expanses of Lewis.
Nearing the summit it is the southern view that holds the eye.
But west from Clisham summit shows how much more there is to climb on Harris - next time!
Long range shot of the W Harris beaches - Losgantair just peeping out on the left middle distance - arguably the most beautiful beach - anywhere??
Who's going to argue? Losgantair beach, with Clisham on the right.
Losgantair with Taransay on the right.
Arctic Tern fishing - Taransay in the background.
I just couldn't stop photographing this beach!
Last morning in Harris - the east coast with its rugged bays, en route to the ferry back over to Skye.
Hope that gives a flavour! Obviously it's not all blues and turquoise, but it's a beautiful world-apart. We kind of liked it!
