Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX
« on: 15:50:33, 12/05/18 »
Hi all

I am hopong someone can give me a bit of advice/recommendation please

I brought a pair of Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX In the new year to train for a hill walking event carrying a weighted bergen. The trainings been going very well but the last month I have been having the side and tops of my little toes rubbing and becoming irritatingly sore.

I am generally fine for a few miles but I am guessing as my feet get hotter they swell up.

From recommendation from my local Cotswold I also have a pair of the green superfeet insoles which have made some difference as I was concerned the weight carried would be causing my feet to flatten and toes to push out, again its helped a little bit but after a 20km hike today the little toes are really sore.

Also sock wise I am using the bridgedale trekkers.

My question is has anyone else had a similar problem with Salomons? I have had a lot of trainers in the past and have always got on with them provided I went up a size.

The boot are a snug fit but I am concerned if I go up a size they will become too loose, its only on the sides and top of my little toes I have the problem.

Advice greatly appreciated :)

Sorry I meant to add that I have also tried taping or using Compeed plasters over the toes which didn't really help. Infact it actually felt like there was more pressure on them.

Sounds like the boots are not your ideal fit, can only suggest that you go to a specialist boot fitter.

Yes, your toes are hitting the tops of your boots, I suspect you need a bigger size. If you bought them from somewhere like Cotswold take them back and ask for advice.

I have the exact same boots and have had no problems in around a year of use,

Not much help but I recently purchased new boots and after being measured and having tried a number of boots - up and down the 'ramp' and stomping around the shop I found that the only boots wide enough and with deep enough toe-box (I have a bunion) were the Meindl Meran.

I found that the most uncomfortable and narrowest of all of the brands and models I tried on were the Quest 4D 3GTX (I know you have the 2GTX and not the 3GTX)

I am normally a 9-10 in shoes and a 10 in boots, but we even went up to an 11 then a 12 in the Quest, to see if they got wider, but they didn't - same width just longer.

For me the Quest is just a very narrow fit boot even 'in the shop'
I know my feet spread after a mile or three and an 18kg pack so unless they bring out some extra width fittings I'll be unlikely to consider them in future.

I price matched the Meindl Meran and ended up paying £148 against a list price of £215.

I have subsequently done several 10+ mile practice walks in the recent heatwave (high 20s Celsius) and can only say the Meran are the most comfortable boot I have ever purchased - HOWEVER, I do find after 10 or 12 miles of hard going my socks are starting to be damp, I don't think the 'ventilation' is as good as advertised.

I had a pair and I found them profoundly comfortable for hiking. Unfortunately mine leaked so I took them back and bought a different make. I think Sussamb may be right, take them back for advice.

Just a side note - not all of the Meindl's seemed to be a wide fit, the Meran certainly was but other models seemed lower in the toe-box and the lace hole studs sat on top of my Bunion (but didn't with the Meran)

*update !

Back to Nottingham Cotswolds today for a proper measuring. Wasnt too far off my current sizing but could not get comfy in Scarpas or Meindls could still feel my little toes on the side and ended up back in 4D 3 GTX but a size and a half bigger, instantly feeling better with green superfoot. Nice and snug around the heel too.

Going to be clomping around the house in them for a few weeks before I go outside in them but early signs are very good!!
