Help for Walking in Europe
« on: 10:03:13, 13/04/07 »
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had any advice on walking in Europe. I want to do around a week of walking campsite to campsite and haven't got a clue where to start with finding out about it!
Any advice and help is much appreciated.
Thanks,Lucy

What part of Europe are you going to as this might help with the question.  There are lots of guide books which can help you in choosing where to go etc check this out it might help www.stanfords.co.uk ;D. Also it depends on what you want to do once there hill/ mountain walking or just flat easy walks. :)

Hi,

You don't mention any particular area but I would like to suggest you try Northern Hungary.
I went hiking there for the first time about 3 years ago and it was so beautiful that I ended up coming back to live here and now go hiking a lot!

There are many campsites dotted around and quite a few guest houses in the village of Szilvasvarod, which lies at the entrance to a big national park so tere are plenty of accomodation options from budget to luxurious.

During the summer I organise hiking tours, my most popular is a 5 hour tour through a beechwood forest, throgh a limestone plateau, then on up to a look out point at over 1000m high and then the high light for most is the walk through the 300 year old wood.

Google Szilvasvarod or Bükk and you should find lots on info or contcat me and I will be happy to help or send photos.

Have a great time wherever yopu end up.

Tracey

I couldn't beleive how beautiful it was out here. Everyone who has come to visit me has enjoyed it so much but then we are not into raving and clubbing all night long...well sometimes.... anyway its very peaceful here. You will even spot horse and carts on the roads transporting goods, some of my friends said it was like stepping back in time 30 or so years. Anyway I'm an English teacher but for the past couple of summers during the holidays (3 months here) I run small hiking tours and no-one has said a bad word yet. If you'd like I can show you some pictures or visit my web site (under maintenance just now though). Its also extremely cheapout here, a beer copsts apx 30p or a meal in  a restaurant 2 or 3 pounds.

Hi i am new to this forum and you are the first i have read.
Well i live in Spain, inland from Alicante, surrounded by vineyards and mountains and i love it here the walking is wonderful and i believe there are organised walks in the area, don't know about camp sites thought.

Since this one has picked up again, I'll throw my bit in, especially as I don't have any special interest.

Firstly, as pointed out previously, decide where you want to go, because walking in Norway is going to be rather different from Greece.   Secondly, check out magazines like TGO and Trail as they frequently run articles on treks abroad.

Once you have a good idea, get hold of a copy of the Rough Guide and/or Lonely Planet guide for the area.    Lonely planet often do 'Walking in ...' books which give you walking ideas, while Rough Guide specialise more in places to stay, campsites etc.

As Walkinggirl has already mentioned, you should be able to get these, and maps, from Stanfords.    While mentioning maps, it is worth noting that for some parts of Europe these can be appalling, for example a map I was forced to use of Crete could not be used with a GPS, some of the detail was incorrect, there were no gridlines and the best scale I could get was 1:100000, so if you want to go to the wilder parts of Europe you may need a good guide book specific to the region you want to walk as well.
