Theres a few good walks around Staunton Harold Resevoir & Calke Abbey, this is one of my regulars and favorites:

1. Start at the main car park at Staunton Harold Resevoir 6 Calke Rd, Melbourne, Derby DE73 8DL
Open from 6.30 am to 5.30 pm cost £2.50/day. cafe and toilets available.

2. Walk to the bottom of the car park, and facing the resevoir to the right along the wooded path, then joining the paved path past the Sailing Club.

3. At the end of the path turn right onto Broadstone Lane, after 200m look for a stile on the left. Through the field heading almost straight down the well walked path to a small bridge over a river.

4. Over the bridge and through the middle of the field on the other side heading up to a stone wall. (This path is normally well worn and easy to follow).

5. At the stone wall turn left and follow through 2 fields over marked stiles to the edge of the Calke Abbey estate.

6. When crossing the gate in the wall at the edge of the Calke estate you should see an information board just to the left. Here the path carries straight on or turns right. The fenced area bound by these paths is the deer park. I normally turn right here and following a circular route will return on the other path. So turn right and follow the path along the edge of the fenced deer park through the woods.

7. At a pond the path turns right and follows the left hand side of the pond. After a short distance there are wide steps cut into the bank on the left follow these steps upward to the Calke Abbey overflow car park.

8. Walk through the car park looking for the exit route for cars. Follow this route - there are many well walked trails that are good diversions if you want to extend the walk here. Very popular with dog walkers. Also mixed cattle & sheep farming with some long horned cattle - very docile and used to visitors but always worth keeping an eye out. If followed this exit road goes past the front of Calke Abbey House and St Giles church with great views of both.

9. At the exit of Calke Abbey turn left and follow the road (tourist traffic only as the road leads to a dead end) until you get to the Resevoir 'Round' car park ... its a circular car park. (If you dont want to pay car parking this road has many places good to pull over out of the way).

10. At the Resevoir round car park follow the steps down from the entrance the edge of the resevoir then left around the resevoir, across a weir and then along the edge of the deer park again keeping the fence on your left.

11. This brings you back to the split in the path at step 6. At the information board carry straight on and look for a gate in the wall to the right.

12. Across 2 fields to a stone wall, turn right and down the middle of the field to a bridge

13. Over the bridge and up through the next field to a stile.

14. Over the stile turn right, after 200m turn left onto the pathway leading back past the Sailing Club and into the Stauton Harold Resevoir car park.
