For me, if I was to go through the decision making and buying process again it would be about a new tent, buying a waterproof jacket, and buying what I should wear under it. My decision making would just drag on and on, so much choice! I know that I wouldn't have real problems in making decisions about rucksacks, boots, hats, trousers, hiking shirts, underwear, socks, and so on. A bit of hesitation but not that much.

I just do day walks, so really my only critical choice is footwear.

And although I have a set routine..go to a shop with qualified boot fitters, try on loads of pairs, etc, etc..I still think it’s a really difficult purchase to get right.

Just about anything over the price of a coffee.
I once ummed and ahhed about buying some shorts that were on sale in Tesco.
£2:10.
Coffee was £1.60 then.
I still wear them.

based on what.
Wearing old shorts. Tight with money. Being uncertain.
Or good looks.

Well 2 out of 4. Being tight with money and wearing old shorts!

I've dithered over a new tent for the best part of a year now, possibly longer. Must come to a decision soon, in time for some wild camping once lockdown ends.

Is that a bit like an economist being an accountant without the personality?  :)

Should that not be 'on the other hand and economist is an accountant without the personality'.
Got my best scores in economics when I was at university.

Having done Economics in the 6th form, I took it with Chemistry and Maths in my first year at university as it meet the breadth requirement.  I lasted 2 weeks before switching to another subject!  It is neither, science, nor art nor good red herring.  Wherever 2 economists are gathered, there will be three opinions and none of them will prove to be right.

I think my most difficult purchases have to be boots and waterproofs.  What I want -v- whether they do what I want them to do -v- what I'm willing to pay all seem to be at odds with each other  ::)

Same with me Mel. The other issue is whether they will fit properly. Unfortunately, we don’t really find out whether we have bought the right products until we have been using them in anger for a period, by which time it is too late.

Footwear.  I've always suffered with foot problems and unfortunately the most comfortable boots I've ever found ended up bought and rebranded (and reduced quality), so my quest for some truly comfortable boots has been ongoing for years now.
