Hi I’m a one armed hiker, well dog walker really, I walk about 6 miles every day, I’m thinking of going further and doing an over nighter, erecting and disassembling a shelter will cause me a few problems I think ,nothing I won’t overcome. I’m thinking a tarp will be easier, any suggestions

Welcome from Aberdeenshire. There are some pop-up tents available. I have never used one, so don’t know how well they perform or how easy they are to erect. They might be worth a look.

A tarp may be easier than a tent depending on how you pitch it,
If you use bungee cords around trees it would be easier than tying a ridge line,
But pitching it with trekking poles might be more problematic for you,
A small tent might be easier If you are not pitching under trees,
It's hard to say without knowing what your abilities are, I would imagine any would be difficult with only one hand,
Pop up tents are easy to pitch, but I think you would struggle folding it away,
I would suggest trying it in your garden, or a park to see which is the best for you,
You could consider a bivvy bag, that doesn't need pitching,

Good luck with it anyway and let us know how you go on,
A couple of pics is always nice :)

I too have the use of only one hand,i manage fine to erect a tent,a single pole pitch as one type, you,d have a real problem with a seperate flysheet in any wind, mines a Zephyros 1,once the pole is in its quite easy to put up.
Whatever you chose,do practice first,you,ll find a way...good luck !!

Thanks guys for your help, I’ve been researching for a while now, today after a few bevvies I pushed the purchase button on amazon, got a gear top trekking pole 1 man tent, trekology walking poles, snug pack jungle blanket, talon 33 pack, a highlander fastboil stove, trekology sleeping mat and pillow, a spork and a hydration pack. Gonna practice the set up and packing tomorrow, then walk a section of the north down way, all practice going well on Sunday/Monday with my Doberman 😆

Would that be a 1 man or 1 dog tent?
So many paths yet to walk, so little time left

Hi gents, just an update, received all my gear, tents up in the garden, managed it in about 10 mins, gonna use it as it stands tonight, then I think my problems might start when I try to pack up in the morning 😂 wish me luck. Won’t get my camping gas until Tuesday Wednesday so my trips gonna be end of week 😁

If the stove is too much of a faff, then why not just leave it behind? I did on a recent trip to the Cairngorms - didn't miss it at all - oatcakes, dried sausage and smoked cheese much nicer than some of the dehydrated mush that is available.

Still haven’t got the gas, so Saturday evening gonna head off to Rochester along the Medway, plenty of pubs to refuel at. 🤪😇
