SONGMICS Sand Proof Beach Mat Blanket Water-repellent Quick-dry Pocket Blanket with 4 Stakes for Picnic, Camping, Hiking GCM90AG, £9.99 on Amazon.
It comes in a drab-olive green and black Nylon like material which looks great and will be great for stealth camping.
However, when it arrived today, and I had a chance to actually look at, I think it may have found a better use for it...As an ultralight, micro tarp shelter!
Unfolded, it measures 160cm (5', 3") x 140cm (4', 7"), which gives a diagonal length of 219cm (7', 2"), just big enough to use as a shelter tarp. It says it is water repellent, so that should make it nigh on waterproof when erected is such a way that water can run off and not pool on top of it.
When used as a picnic blanket, it comes with four, fairly heavy duty, x- profile plastic tent pegs to allow the user to hold the corners down. There are webbing loops sewn onto each corner to put the pegs through.
Or you can save 30g and leave the pegs at home, and instead, put rocks, stones or sand into the four sewn in corner pockets to weigh the corners down. The webbing loops will also allow it to be hung over some paracord as a tarp shelter. Ideally, I would hang it in diamond configuration, with one corner low to the ground or even pegged down, with the other tied to the rising ridge line with a prussic knot to tension it, and the other two corners pulled out and guyed with more cord and pegged down. I have 300metres of 1mm, olive green, braided Dyneema fishing line with a breaking strain of 136kg, which weighs next to nothing per metre, to use as the ridge line and guy lines.
A 7 foot by 6 foot tarp weighs over 600g, but the Songmics picnic blanket/tarp shelter weighs just 222g, with pegs and the draw cord carry pouch, so two of them would still weigh less than an ex-army basha tarp.
The four pegs together weigh 30g and the carry pouch weighs another 10g, so put it in a resealable polythene bag, weighing 2g, and leave the pegs at home and you can get it down to just 185g. Not bad for under a tenner!
