I paid £70 return recently from Portsmouth to Caen on Brittany Ferries as a foot passenger. They are now doing a 4 day special offer for passenger and bike for a return fare of £64.

The MOD are issuing a new rage of boots this year. Apparently it will be a gradual rollout as kit needs replacing but if they clear out any remaining stocks there we may see more new boots of the current type for sale.

I think the replacements may prove popular when they reach the surplus market:

I've just aquired a pair of Altberg Defenders, also looking around for some Lowa desert boots, they will be both my walking & work boots for the next few months. I've had a few flair-ups of tendonitus on the top of both feet over the last couple of years. The higher military boots allow me to skip lace eyelets over the effected area but still retain support, hopefully allowing my feet to heal properly.

A water filter that appears much like the Sawyer for a tenner:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Purifier-Traveling-Emergency-Preparedness-Filtration/dp/B07749G9GJ/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1528787202&sr=8-2-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=hihill+water+purifier+outdoor&psc=1
It's cheap but looking at the mouthpiece in the pic it doesn't allow  a tube to be fitted for gravity filtering  like the Sawyer does :)

Yes its cheap, but it is only rated as 1500 litres, whilst the Sawyer is 450,000 (yes - four hundred and fifty thousand) litres.

So the Sawyer works out a lot "cheaper per litre"

I am a bit sceptical at the level of filtration (0.01 Micron) when all major manufacturers are 0.1 micron)

Specifications
Weight: 53g/ 0.12lb
Length of Tube: 70cm/ 27.6"
Filter Micron Size: 0.01 Micron
Dimension: 31*160mm/ 1.2"*6.3"
Max Filter Water Capacity: 1500L / 396 Gallons
Main Material: ABS, PP, Ultra filtration membrane, Pre-carbon filter

Stoats porridge bars half price in Tescos right now; £1.24 for a pack of four; Apple and Cinnamon, and Blueberry and Honey. Great trail food, a favourite of mine, and 226 kcal per bar.

I bought EIGHT packets.

My local B&M has stocked Highgate flapjacks at the same price for at least 2 years, so no need to rush.

SONGMICS Sand Proof Beach Mat Blanket Water-repellent Quick-dry Pocket Blanket with 4 Stakes for Picnic, Camping, Hiking GCM90AG, £9.99 on Amazon.
It comes in a drab-olive green and black Nylon like material which looks great and will be great for stealth camping.
However, when it arrived today, and I had a chance to actually look at, I think it may have found a better use for it...As an ultralight, micro tarp shelter!
Unfolded, it measures 160cm (5', 3") x 140cm (4', 7"), which gives a diagonal length of 219cm (7', 2"), just big enough to use as a shelter tarp.  It says it is water repellent, so that should make it nigh on waterproof when erected is such a way that water can run off and not pool on top of it.
When used as a picnic blanket, it comes with four, fairly heavy duty, x- profile plastic tent pegs to allow the user to hold the corners down. There are webbing loops sewn onto each corner to put the pegs through.
Or you can save 30g and leave the pegs at home, and instead, put rocks, stones or sand into the four sewn in corner pockets to weigh the corners down.  The webbing loops will also allow it to be hung over some paracord as a tarp shelter. Ideally, I would hang it in diamond configuration, with one corner low to the ground or even pegged down, with the other tied to the rising ridge line with a prussic knot to tension it, and the other two corners pulled out and guyed with more cord and pegged down.  I have 300metres of 1mm, olive green, braided Dyneema fishing line with a breaking strain of 136kg, which weighs next to nothing per metre, to use as the ridge line and guy lines.
A 7 foot by 6 foot tarp weighs over 600g, but the Songmics picnic blanket/tarp shelter weighs just 222g, with pegs and the draw cord carry pouch, so two of them would still weigh less than an ex-army basha tarp.
The four pegs together weigh 30g and the carry pouch weighs another 10g, so put it in a resealable polythene bag, weighing 2g, and leave the pegs at home and you can get it down to just 185g.  Not bad for under a tenner!

The Sawyer will only allow that amount of water to be filtered if the source water is relatively sediment free, if you back-flush it thoroughly after each use, and dry it correctly afterwards...otherwise, it too would eventually block and become useless after a few thousand litres.  No doubt the HiHill would filter a lot more than the stated 1500 litres if it could be back-flushed too.  The HiHill has one advantage over the Sawyer...It has an activated Charcoal filter built in...Which will remove toxins and heavy metals that the Sawyer cannot remove and it will improve the taste of the filtered water...Not bad for the price.

That is quite cheap, but I would still rather pay a bit more and get a pair of
Merrell Moab 2 Mid GTX Boots instead, because the so called "Supalite'" boots in question actually weigh a whopping 1122g!  The Merrell's are 186g lighter, and you don't need to break them in...Comfort straight out the box!:

Found these on eBay. Obviously I can't vouch for the seller but they do have 100% positive feedback and the item is covered by the Ebay Money Back Guarantee and 30 day returns/refund is offered at buyer's expense if required.

Oboz Men's Sawtooth Mid B-DRY Waterproof Walking Boots in Olive Sizes UK 6½ to 13½ available at the mega bargain price of only £28.51 with free delivery.
That's less than half the price of anywhere else I can find and these have a normal RRP of £125.

I posted about these boots previously after buying some a few weeks ago http://www.walkingforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=32782.msg519110#msg519110

Thanks for this KinkyBoots, have scared some moths by opening my wallet to try these boots. If no use for walking will replace my old Karrimors that i use in the allotment, but which have seen better days. So hopefully a win, win situation. Was going to head off to Sports Direct for some gardening boots this afternoon, saved me the hassle.
Too little, too late, too bad......
