Isle of Portland Path closure Updates
« on: 10:35:51, 25/08/14 »
Just as a quick update for you all regarding the Isle of Portland Path Closures.

WESTCLIFF PRIORY CORNER TO BLACKNOR FORT.... If heading along the Southwest Coast Path anticlockwise, there are two closed off section due to toppling movement. Both sections are clearly closed off with wooden fencing and diversions in-land are still in place. The first diversion takes you through Tout Quarry, which is now a sculpture park. Follow the small posts with Diversion arrows. when passing through the cutting, when you enter the quarry take the large gravel path to the right and head uphill to a large sculpture area. Head for the Large sculpture with the large grey wedge keeping it to your Right and pass down along a rough path back out on to the west cliff.

The second (Southerly of the two) Diversion is similar in length, and again brings you inland. Follow the path that curves uphill to the right. as it levels at the top veer left and head straight. You will see a hill with some wooden railings...DO NOT GO UP THERE unless you are exploring... There is a small mound of earth you need to climb, and this takes you back down to the Coast Path.

EAST CLIFF YOUNG OFFENDERS PRISON. If you are heading Clockwise and heading to Portland Bill, and you wish to avoid the old railway Track below the cliffs (It is a brilliant walk, so I don't why you would) you will need to take the cliff top path. This path also has a closed off section. So as you pass the Prison fence and walls, you must follow the road to the right for the Prison Main South entrance. Opposite the Prison Entrance there is the Governors Garden (Open to The Public). Enter the gardens and take the long path that lies to the left. This takes you past the Green houses to your left and the bowling green which comes up on your right. Keep heading for the south east corner of the gardens and there you will find a kissing gate. you can Then rejoin the cliff top path.

Hope this helps, and don't forget...Portland is an explorers Isle.. if you have plenty of time... there is so much to see! Don't forget Portland Museum, always a must visit! Hope you enjoy your walk on Portland. All the Best
