Walking trousers that don't look like 70's flares??

Are there any tapered walking trousers out there or do they all flap about at the ankles (to allow room for boots I assume?)


I know some have drawstrings to bring the trouser bottoms in, but I'd rather have a pair that actually taper.


Any suggestions appreciated, as I've looked and can't find any.

Montane Terra pants highly recommended by me, I have 3 pairs, Rab also do one with the same sort of fit. There's also Ron Hill Tracksters, wear a  pair of shorts over them for pockets & modesty.

I'm a Tracksters fan - never thought of wearing shorts over the top of them! Not going to, either.
Great for walking, though, and serve as a base layer for my fibre pile salopettes in real winter conditions.

I have some Craghoppers Kiwis like the OP describes. The label claims they're my size but they're more like something from the outsize mans shop! With the current trend of skinny jeans I feel a bit self-conscious wearing them.

Have a look at Sprayway trousers. The pair I had a few years use of (model n.l.a.) had slender legs, and current ones on their web page look similiarly narrow.

I have the Craghoppers Kiwis ordinary and insulated, and they're some of the ones that flap about at the bottom (I have others by Regatta and Peter Storm that are exactly the same!).


I'll have a look at the Sprayway ones, thanks for the suggestion, although I think this is one instance where I'll be better going into a physical shop when I can, so I know exactly what I'm getting!

I have 4 pairs of the Craghopper Kiwi pro stretch. Great trousers and definitely not flappy.

The Tracksters are not too tight a fit, certainly not like the skin tight lycra leggings that you see nowadays.

I wore flares in the 70s, (and a Kaftan at times),   Kiwi Classics are nothing like flares, they're about all I wear now, comfortable, reasonably hard wearing, and very important to me - two zipped  pockets, one for keys, one for cash, (I don't count the back pockets, never use them for anything). The only improvements I'd like to see would be a second cargo pocket, go back to the older style side-release clip on the belt and sew the damned fly button on a bit better, I invariably have to do that after about a month.

Tracksters for me too for most of the year, the comfort and freedom of movement are superb 

Mine are Trackster Treks and relatively thick material, nothing like the very figure-hugging thin tights that people generally think of. Like so many great products one finds, naturally they don't make them any more (mine are around 20 years old now!).

I must say I've never noticed that the ankles of walking trousers I've seen are particularly loose or flappy.
In winter I wear OEX thicker windproof trousers and they don't flap about at the ankle (OEX is - I think - the GoOutdoors own brand).

Got to comment that my walking trouser leg bottoms don't flap about because I always tuck them into my socks.

Rohan do a good range that are not flappy and a reasonable price if you buy them when they are in the sale.

I also use some old Tracksters for mountain biking and scrambling, but prefer a looser fit when it is warmer. Mountain Equipment make a number of well-fitting trousers which aren’t baggy. I have a pair of Comici pants for summer use if I am not wearing shorts. I wear RAB Vapour-rise Guide trousers in the cold and snow, and Arcteryx Gamma ARs in between. None are baggy below the knees on me. Needless to say all bought in sales and all recommended.

I find the Kiwis very wide at the bottom for my preferences, and I can't state that enough, it's just my personal preferences, hence my question as to whether there are narrower options.


The insulated Kiwi's in particular are a fantastic trouser, but I just don't like the cut
