Brownsea Island Wildlife
« on: 18:39:15, 18/06/18 »
Recently had a weekend down in Swanage which included a trip to Brownsea Island where we had the treat of seeing many red squirrels, sika deer and assorted wetland birds.

Enjoy every sandwich

Thank You all

The reds are definitely my favourite UK mammal. I've now seen them in Borrowdale, Isle of Wight and Anglesey also but Brownsea Island has been the best place to see them.
Enjoy every sandwich

Some good pictures here.

This brings back distant memories of trips to Brownsea Island with cubs and scouts. I particularly remember very large ants and peacocks. I did go to another Poole Harbour island more recently. I was on Furzey Island for work and was surprised to see golden pheasants, which I believe are also to be found on Brownsea. I also heard about deer swimming out from the mainland and between the islands, but didn’t see this for myself.

It is always good to see red squirrels. Northern Scotland is still a stronghold for them and we see them sometimes in our garden. I have always had a soft spot for oystercatchers. Their voice boxes seem to be connected to their wings, as they don’t appear to be able to fly with making a joyful noise.
