[ Trip Report ] Saddleworth Moors + Black hill
« on: 21:59:54, 18/07/09 »
Today myself, Rayf52, Deano, Theguyuk and Steve did a 13 mile walk round the Saddleworth Moors and Black Hill area of the Peak District. And at the end a nice pint in a pub in Greenfield.

The walk started at Dovestone Reservoir under cloudy grey sky's and felt more like March than July.

Passing the Dovestone's and Greenfield Reservoir we started the ascent of Birchin Clough which suddenly turned into another Wildboar Clough being very wet and some hard scrambles at time's.

Better watch where you putting your feet jim we don't want you falling over!!!

looking back down Birchin Clough.

Some madman preparing for a jump. I wonder why nobody else wanted to join me.

A little joke between me and ray. Dizzy this is the one and only time you will see me with a walking pole. enjoy  ;D

A very Black Hill indeed.

The summit trig point of Black Hill.

One of the many streams that had to be crossed today, which resulted in steve falling on his backside in one  ;D

Come on Ray get a move on..

looking towards Crowden from Laddow Rocks.

Radder on the edge again..

looking towards Wimberry Rocks from Chew Reservoir.

And finally back to Dovestone Reservoir ending a excellent walk in the Peak District.

Charming ::) ::)
Sorry radder (and everyone) - that was meant to be a kind of "get outta here [rolls eyes]" type comment but overstepped the mark. It was aimed at the photo (standing on the edge, scary stuff) not at radder.

A great ascent route, Birchin Clough, and the pictures are very good indeed in the dull flat light. I don't remember any scrambles up there to speak of, but I guess it depends on the exact line taken (and it was a long time ago!).

I suppose the paved Pennine Way over Black Hill summit is welcome, but in a way it's also a pity: it had a countrywide reputation to maintain as the jaw-dropping megabog that stopped first-time visitors in their tracks!.
