Title: Camping with a dog
Post by: Pipp on 19:25:15, 18/07/19
Apologies if this seems like a daft question but I'm soon going to be camping with my dog for the first time and wondered what everyone else does with their dogs when it come to showering and nipping to the loo? It'll just be me and the dog so not like I've got anyone to take it in turns with.

Looks like you will have to take your dog with you  :)

That was my thought but I though other campers may not take too kindly to a dog in the showers  ;D

We go wild camping so don't have that problem  :)

Sounds like it's a naughty dog so the obvious thing is it will need tying to a tree or post while you're gone, unlike a good dog that would just sit and wait for you to come back.
But then I'm not a dog owner, so what do I know?

Even a good dog will turn into a naughty dog if a cat saunters past.

Especially a spaniel!

If I'm just popping in for a pee, I just tie the dog to a handy fencepost or whatever.

I wasn’t aware that a spaniel was a cat  ;D

I went camping with a dog. I put him in the tent while I went off to the washroom. I couldn't have fastened the zip properly, because when I came out the dog was waiting outside for me. Made me laugh, clever dog. Would have been more sensible to leave him in the car.

She's definitely not naughty, it's more the fact she always wants to be with me.
She is a spaniel, however cats don't bother her it's birds she likes!
I'm guessing I'll just have to assess the site when I'm there and work out what's most suitable...or I'll have to stink for a day  :D
Fit old bird - brilliant! At least he came to you rather than wandering off!

Our spaniel did exactly the same a few days ago when we were camping in the lakes - my wife was cleaning her teeth and our spaniel suddenly appeared at her side in the wash room; I thought she was in our big family tent dozing. She will chase cats - and birds, rabbits, hares - anything smaller than her that runs away, in fact. And unfortunately she will kill if she gets her teeth upon them, so we have to be careful.

As Ilona infers in her post, perhaps best to lock the dog in the car for 10 minutes if you have bought it camping.

Dogs should always be on a lead on campsites so attach said lead to a solid object with a length of cord, preferably with shade and water available.  In the good old days we attached our dog to the car bumper rather than putting it in the car - harder these days as cars lack bumpers.  You can get a helical peg to attach a dog to. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Royal-Tether-Spiral-Camping-Anchor/dp/B016A64PK8 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Royal-Tether-Spiral-Camping-Anchor/dp/B016A64PK8)

You won't stink after one day of not having a wash. If you're on your own only you to smell it anyway. Take some wet wipes and wipe around your smelly bits with them.

Yes, dog was old, wanted to be with me all the time. I could walk him off lead and he wouldn't leave my side. I miss him.  :(

I have visions of you driving off forgetting the dog was tied to the bumper!

You are so right to say this. Indeed, it did happen a few years back in America. People unloading the groceries from their car, man drove off with two dogs tied to the back bumper. You can guess the rest. Don't tie your dogs to anything that can be moved.

I'd be hesitant to put the dog in the car if the weather is hot, sunny, humid unless it was in the shade.

So would I. I only went for a pee and to brush my teeth.

I've not been camping with my pooch yet, but when I do, I'll be looking one of those corkscrew like ground steaks and a long lead. Unfortunately I cant post a picture for some reason, but you can get them pretty cheap from Pets At Home and Amazon. They look like handy anchor points though I'm not sure the ones I've seen so far would stop my Ridgeback if she really wanted to follow me to the toilet....
