Title: Mussels in Loch Nevis?
Post by: Lyndon on 18:44:47, 16/07/17
Hi

I'm doing the longest pub walk from Glenfinnan to the Old Forge Inn at Inverie, Knoydart in a week or so.

I love to eat mussels and I believe they are plentiful in Loch Nevis.

Are they ok to eat at this time of year?

I don't know whether to believe the saying about only eat mussels when the month's name has an 'R' in it.

Any advice would be much appreciated...

I have always thought mussels were at their best between late September and end of March. I'm sure you'll find them in summer but we wouldn't eat them when in France at that time of year.

Are you planning on hoiking them out of the loch yourself?!  ;)

I have just returned from Knoydart so I am incredibly envious of your trip. Some of our party had mussels there at the Old Forge and enjoyed them. Also Knoydart River Cottage does meals on Saturdays and one other night (pos Wednesdays) and she sometimes has seafood inc mussels.

You will need to book if you want to eat at either place as they need to know numbers to get the food shipped in in the morning.

Yes, my intention is to gather them from the loch myself and boil them in my pot...
