Hello everybody,
I'm an ancient walker who has walked Offa's Dyke and some pilgrimage GRs in France, generally alone and most recently from my home on the Kent coast to Paris. I often bivouac overnight tentless but in reasonable comfort. I enjoy getting the weight of my pack down to an absolute minimum. I get lost about least once a day so I'm now keen to find a simple way to find the route again, using my smartphone.
Looking forward to some good discussions about walking generally.

Hello Hugh
Welcome from another ancient walker, living in Twickenham.
I use the Viewranger app on my smartphone to tell me where I am when I get lost (usually more than once a day!). It integrates the phone's gps with maps on your phone screen in a clear way, records your track and you can upload routes to follow. The app and basic maps are free but you have to buy OS maps (25000:1 typically). As you only buy the 'tiles' you need it's not too pricey. I'm sure there are lots of other equally good apps and other people on the forum will probably suggest some.
Best Wishes
JW

I was born in Kent and lived just outside Maidstone until I was 18. I now live in Portsmouth. Welcome. I use the Backcountry app in the UK and Sity Trail app in France, both work very well.

Sorry, I'm confusing things. My fairly verbose self-introduction was genuine. But among the replies to it, there were some about cars of a clearly spam nature. I'm afraid I have been delayed in following up on peoples' suggestions but will tell the forum how I'm going before long.
I am in communication with the author of GPX Viewer.
