Title: [Trip Report] - What I wanted for Christmas...
Post by: Dazza on 11:22:15, 27/12/07
was to walk up Kinder Scout from Grindsbrook Clough (well it was boxing day really, but you know what I mean).

Our second trip to Kinder Scout and a good excuse to get out there - to work off that Xmas pudding of course, and no, we didn't have Turkey sandwiches ;D.

I won't go into too much detail as we've been here before (that and I'm supposed to be working).

The day started off fairly overcast but later on (as you'll see from the pictures) Kinder Scout was bathed in golden sunlight. There weren't many other walkers around so it was wonderfully quiet and strangely relaxing considering how much effort a walk on Kinder can take.

It was of course fairly windy, but thankfully it was mainly gusty rather than a constant breeze. This meant we could walk and actually talk rather than shout, a very pleasant day to be out and about all in all.

The route was from Edale village heading up Grindsbrook Clough. Grindbrook Clough has been described as a scramble, but it looks much worse than it is. I had to resort to using my hands a few times but not very many at all really. As you're looking at your feet you keep moving onwards and upwards, then you find yourself at the top the really steep bit you were expecting never actually comes. A pleasant surprise.

From the Clough we headed along the footpaths to the Tower, through the Woolpacks and down Jacobs Ladder. We were going to go over Brown Knoll, Rushup Edge, Mam Tor and down at Hollins Cross but the fading light meant we had to cut the walk a short. Still, we'll come back and do the other half of the horseshoe in the new year.

An excellent way to spend boxing day.

A great walk & report Dazza. It's an area I've never visited, guess there's too much on my doorstep. Enjoyed your photographs, ever thought of setting up a weblog or website?

KIDSTYPYKE

I used to run a website, it wasn;t walking related though. I doubt I'd have time today! I've been meaning to write up Whernside, Old man of Coniston and Curbar for some time.

Never seem to have the time.

I love the Lakes and Derbyshire, sadly I don;t get enough time to send much time in either.

Summit...
The erosion is getting worse, I'm not a big one for flagged paths (I prefer the natural look) but they need them on Kinder Scout more than ever.

It's a very special place, remiscent of the Lake district - especially some of the views - but with a character all of it's own.

I hope the work they're doing to preserve it pays dividends.

Hi Dazza! Yet another fundamental wirte up there Dazza and some gorgeous pictures you got of Derbyshire this is another one of many haunts, of our we love this place and Grindsbrook clough is a great scramble.  And the bogs are a fantastic playground.  Did this walk last year in white out a little hairy but great fun,  also done this one in snow,  which was a absolutely lovely day out.

For anyone who not been here this is a must place to go you'll have a grand day out here, with lots of fun memories to recommend which will not be forgotten.  Throughout you're life time.

Cheers for the story Dazza!  Glad you enjoyed it and bunt of you're Christmas pudding hehe!!!!!!

Excellent write up and pictures, some of those rock formations are just amazing.  You could sit and stare at them for hours.
