I've recently acquired a Garmin Etrex H GPS, only to discover that I need a cable to connect it to my PC (none was included in the box). Just had a look on Amazon and E-Bay, and there are about 2 million different kinds of cable for Garmin devices, could someone recommend one that would do the job for me?

There seems to be only one cable avaliable that goes from an e trex to the serial port which nobody has anymore so you then have to get a serial to usb converter to and it gets expensive. I got one from america on ebay that was a direct to usb one. Took a bit to figure it out as you might see in this thread but its fine now :) working away till tomorrow night but could send you the link to the ebay shop I got it from when I'm home tomorrow if you like

Ive been considering one of these Garmins .. Go Outdoors have them for £57.. but reading this thread, it appears it doesnt come with everything you actually need...? You buy it then have to buy the lead seperately in order to upload routes to it..?

Yeah you have to get the lead seperate with this one and I agree it is a con! I'm only really using mine to get a grid reference and then work off my map and compass but if your looking to plot the routes on the comp you need a seperate lead

and I wouldn't mind so much, but actually finding the correct cable is proving to be a task in itself!!

Just done an ebay search off my phone and found a lead. Search usb data cable etrex h and its one from america for £11.17. That's cheaper than buying the two seperate leads!

Thank you for your help, I've found the item I was looking for. Does seem strange that for a popular device that this thing was not obvoius to find.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-PC-data-Cable-Garmin-GPS-Etrex-H-NEW-/360375870682?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e81364da

cost me $22.92 (£14.63) including postage & packing

From what I can gather if the Etrex has a card slot then it comes with a cable, if not it doesn't.  The basic Etrex H uses a serial interface, but for others it's USB and I've used a cable I already had for my daughters mp3 player, so for those not yet with a cable it's worth checking other cables you might already have  O0
