Being a bit obsessed with walking, I like to explore new places & am particularly interested in the history of walks/places, why those routes came to be etc.
For example local to me (Nottingham) there are several walks that have interesting histories for there existence:-
The Monk's Way, a medieval path, which served as a route for the Monk's to transport goods via packhorses/mules to the River Trent from their abbey's at Felley, Dale Abbey & Newstead. Many of the well worn flagstones still exist.
The Coffin Walk at Breaston - 5 miles connecting 2 churches. St Michael's only performed mass, so funerals had to take place at St Chad's & coffins had to be transported by men. On route are coffin stones, so that the men could rest a while.
The Miner's Walk - connecting the many pits to the villages/towns in the area.
There are many more, but I'm keen to know if you know of any local to you that in time I'll get round to exploring.
