A Carneddau Traverse
« on: 22:05:41, 02/04/09 »
Just sat down having a well deserved glass of red wine. What a fantastic day out - sorry to all who couldn't make it as you missed a treat. Very tiring, but stunning scenery along the way. We dropped a car off at the end of our walk at Aber Falls - £2 parking and then drove down to park at the end of Llyn Ogwen. Initially it was disappointing to see low cloud hanging around the peaks and I thought I was in for no views again from the tops. But after a slog and a scramble up to Pen Yr Ole Wen, you can imagine the grins on our faces  when we saw this lot. We finished just over 8hrs later at Aber Falls - story and more pictures soon, and from the other guys to follow.

Looking along Llyn Ogwen to Y garn

Into the mist

Snowdon hiding behind Y Garn

Tryfan on the left with the Glyders to the right

A wider shot of the same

Adam or Eve showing very clearly on the top of Tryfan

Aber Falls where we ended our day

Some nice snaps there Pete, though it's Elidir Fawr not Snowdon that you can see peeping out from behind Y Garn in the third picture. Nice cloud inversion too, very atmospheric. I mist a good day by the looks of it. [censored]**y work, roll on retirement.

You missed a cracker Robbo - sunburn included. I'm pretty sure that it is Snowdon and not Elidir Fawr. That was away to our right. That picture was taken before we got to the summit so we couldn't even see Elidir Fawr until later. I'll post some more this afternoon if I can stand up.

Hi KEySTONe - it wasn't bad actually and it broke up the climb to the summit nicely, rather than having a straight climb up the side of a big hill. This was the worse bit and it's not as bad as it looks, just straightforward with good handholds all the way.

Hi all,

Some of mine from a great days walking, full 8 ish hours of up and down, then more up and then some more !!!!  Excellent especially that last descent   :o :o

Start of the walk with cloud hanging low over the Glyders and Tryfan

Going up the easy part of Pen yr Ole Wen

The scramble with quartz in the rocks, (is that right Pete?)

Monsters from the deep, Mike and Paul I think.

Clouds clearing on top of Ole Wen

Clouds rollong through the gap between Tryfan and Glyders

Clouds burning away revealing Tryfan and the Glyders

The rocky ascent of Carnedd Dafydd

Rocks on top of Dafydd looking over towards Snowdon, ish !!

Walking down the other side of Dafydd

At this point my camera battery died and thats it from me for the trip.  Gutted as the weather was sooo good.

Thanks for a great day out fellas.

Regards,

Graham

Ecky thump!!!
Fab pics all round.
How did you manage to light on such good weather, I wonder?
What puzzles me too,  is how did I get my dog up that scramble back in the 1980's. - and in the rain...?

Robbo - I'm wrong again after looking at the pictures - I think it must be Garnedd Ugain again

It was certainly a red letter day! 8) I've not seen a cloud inversion before so to be treated to one as spectacular as that was amazing. My legs are stiff and the back of my neck is sun burned but it was well worth it. It was a pleasure to meet you Graham and Kenny and hopefully we'll meet again on future walks.

Just to clarify for those reading this thread; We ascended Pen yr Ole Wen by taking the path from Glan Dena (at the foot of Tryfan) up to just before Ffynnon Lloer where we branched off west and headed up to the summit of Pen yr Ole Wen. We didn't do the path that starts at Idwal Cottage and heads straight up, that would've been a scramble and a half! :o

OK Robbo - I've just got in from the pub and with my beer goggles on I have finally figured out what that photo shows -  It is Snowdon at the back, and in front is Garnedd Ugain and Grib Goch - not the usual views of these tops.

and now back to some liquid entertainment..

Cheers everyone

Sorry Robbo, I'm with Peter on this one but from a far more technical angle.

It was the tallest mountain. :)

I zoomed in on one of the pictures and could make out the trig point on top of Garnedd Ugain - so now I'm sober it is 100% Garnedd Ugain...probably
