The Roaches and Lud's church 17/07/17
« on: 17:22:27, 18/07/17 »
OK, I know it's old hat but for me it was a trip onto uncharted territory. I parked at Upper Hulme and followed the masses onto the ridge, past Docksey Pool and the trig point to Roach End from where I did a quick out and back to Lud's Church.

Fortunately there was an ice cream van at Roach End and as I sat enjoying my treat. a guy with a dog arrived and bought two Super Whippy cornets. You've guessed - one was for the dog. Never seen anything disappear so fast.

Two disappointments. Docksey Pool was surrounded by dozens of "pool slugs" so no photo. Secondly I found that the trig point is not the highest point in Staffs. Cheek Hill is 15m higher. Oh well, win some, lose some. But a great day out.  O0

Lud's Church photos all wrong so omitted. Bluidy Tinypics.

Back to the start

Fab pics Penygadair  O0   Popular/touristy it may be but it's still a cracking walk with great views.  That ice cream van must make a fortune - there were queues when we did it as a forum meet last year.

Well done on snapping the UFO by the way (pic 6)  ;)   ;D

Great photos, Penygadair.  O0   I've only been there once myself but it was a great walk and I should make the trip back. Sounds like I might need to get up really early to beat the crowds though, a bit like Ilam and Dovedale.

Thanks for the comments.

Adalard. I would agree with an early start . It's not just the walking masses arriving by car (and it was Monday!) but the number of groups of young people presumably doing their DoE. Assume they all came from the YHA and camps at Gradbach. But I'm not complaining; there's plenty of space for everyone. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I like that area round Gradbach - it seems more isolated than a lot of the Peak District.
