Level crossings where you have to phone to cross are a bit of a rarety, something I haven't had to do.

Interesting walk, Lee
On St Cuthbert's Way you have to cross the main East coast line, with trains whizzing by at well over 100 mph.  You phone the signalman and he asks how long you need to cross the lines.  When you are told to cross you cross, FAST!

I'd already crossed the ECML a couple of miles earlier without needing to phone the signalman - must be because of poor sightlines.
