Yesterday saw the first dry Saturday in a month for me. With the eastern Mournes clagged in, I opted for a lower level walk in the western Mournes. Hen mountain and Slievenamiskan made an obvious combination for a circular walk. Starting from Hen car park I approached the western side of the mountain. I gained the summit half an hour after leaving the car park. Eagle mountain, the highest in the western Mournes, could be seen. I descended Hen mountain before ascending Slievenamiskan; this section of the walk was very marsh. After 40 minutes I gained the summit as views of the central Mournes opened up across Spelga Reservoir. I descended the southern side of Slievenamiskan to a good track before returning to the car park. Total distance was 6.5km.
