alcohol
« on: 15:55:57, 01/01/18 »
I am planning to fly to Wales and hike the Pembrokeshire coast in the spring.  I always carry a small alcohol stove.  Where is the easiest place to buy methyl or Ethel  alcohol there??  I normally carry only about 8oz at a time so I am not interested in large quantities.

When I saw the headline I thought you were going to ask us how much did we drink over Christmas and the New Year. Obviosly I was wrong. Sorry, can't help you, I'm the can't cook, won't cook, only drink cold water during the day kind of hiker. Then its beer and/or wine in the evening.  :)

Sorry, can't help you regarding the cooking fuel but I did the Pembrokeshire Coast Path in 2016 and really enjoyed it.

As regards the stove, I thought there were airline restrictions on stoves that used liquid to burn which meant that they weren't allowed or did I read it wrong? Best make sure as it may vary with each Airline.

In the UK the alcohol used for stoves is usually called 'methylated spirit' and is mainly ethyl alcohol with something added to make it undrinkable. Hardware stores or DIY stores sell it, as do pharmacies, although it may be more expensive from the latter  :-\ . You can certainly buy it in 500ml bottles (is that about 16 fluid oz?). Don't know anything about airline rules on stoves but I am also walking the Pembrokeshire Coast Path (rather slowly) and loving it (see my blog http://greenlives.org.uk/pcp.html ). :)

With a name like John Walker you are the best person to answer a question about alcohol  ;D

A quick check on a converter shows that 500ml is 17.6 UK fluid oz or 16.9 US fluid oz, so you were pretty close.

Airline restrictions are for stoves with fuel or fuel vapors.  The stove I carry holds only 1 1/2 oz of fuel and is good to boil roughly 500ml of water.  Coming from the States requires I learn a different set of references.  We have strayed far from the Queens English.  Thanks

Grrr, where are you flying in to and then how are you getting to the start of your walk. I'm sure that somewhere on your journey you will not be too far from a large DIY store who will sell meths.

It is also sold on ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Methylated-Spirit-250ml-500ml-/231996665209?_trksid=p2349526.m2548.l4275 so you could possibly have it delivered to your first nights accommodation if you warn them to expect a parcel.

Unfortunately, I'm from the poverty-stricken meths-drinking side of the family ;)

I hope to fly into Cardiff then supply and train / bus to Pendine for the night.  Day 2 bus to Amroth and start the walk.  I'm looking forward to enjoying the local cuisine morning and night.  Though, I have found that a hot cup of something mid day forces me to take in the view and relax.  I don't expect to need to cook but coming off of the Appalachian Trail (2,200miles) in the states some habits are hard to break.  It is said that we carry our fears in our packs and at age 71 I don't like being hungry.  Thanks guys for your help.  This is as close as I will probably get to the 'Old Sod", Me mum was an English war bride.

From your schedule I think the best option would be to look for a small hardware shop in Saundersfoot or Tenby.
