Title: Christmas classic on Chimney
Post by: henryb on 13:55:35, 17/12/17
As I drove to the Mournes yesterday, the eastern Mournes seemed clearer than the cloud covered western peaks so I decided to take in Chimney Rock via SLievenagarragh. I drove to a small car park 2.5 miles from Newcastle and started walking around 1145am. It was a very windy day. I started off on a good track beside a river before walking through thick bracken to Slievenagarragh's summit, the first peak of the day. Views were curtailed in front of me by the higher Chimney Rock but eastwards an impressive panorama opened up of the Irish Sea. Continuing on over pathless terrain I summited Chimney at 115pm. Cloud covered the higher peaks above 700 metres but elsewhere the visibility was generally good. I didn't want to return the same way so I decided to venture further to Slieve Beg before descending on a good track between Donard and Chimney back to the car park. I finished at 3.30pm.

As always, great photos, Henry. Nice to see the dusting of snow - I like how it brings out some of the features on the crags and mountainsides.  O0

Great photos Henry.

There was a topic recently about pronouncing hill names but I've no idea where I would start with most of those.
