Sucking the joy out of walking
« on: 20:40:54, 11/07/20 »

Came across this whilst randomly browsing on the internet :

Name:Rainsborrow Crag
Hill number:7990
Height:641m / 2103ft
Parent (Ma):2528  High Street
RHB Section:34C: Lake District - Eastern Fells
Nuttall/Wainwright area:Lake District - Far Eastern Fells
County/UA:Cumbria (CoU)
Catchment:Kent
Class:Synge(Sy)
Grid ref:NY 44144 06765
Summit feature:outcrop
Drop:2m
Col:639m  NY441067
OS map sheet(s):(1:50k) 90 (1:25k) OL7N
Observations:rock 8m SW is 20cm lower
Survey:Abney level

Why do people feel the need to catalogue the hills in such detail?

I suppose it is the walking manifestation of the stamp collecting gene.
I must confess that I have it slightly. I have 'done' the Wainwrights, which I know you have no truck with, but it did take me 30 years so I'm not too obsessive.

I resisted the temptation to mention stamp collecting  :D

I'm not intending this to be a Wainwright bashing exercise; rather I am astonished at the level of detail in cataloguing an insignificant prominence on the end of a short ridge (2m drop to the'col', and does anyone need to know that the rock 8m SW is 20cm lower?

And what on earth is a 'Synge' (no please don't answer - I don't want to know).

Looks like a nice place for an airy wild camp though, a small tarn on a ridge above a cliff overlooking a lovely valley - I had just spotted the tarn on the 1:25000 map, which led me to this wretched catalogue entry.

And what on earth is a 'Synge' (no please don't answer - I don't want to know).

"There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known" said the great philosopher Danny Baker.  Allegedly.

So... http://www.hill-bagging.co.uk/Synges.php

I also had to Google https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topographic_Abney_level

Far too much detail for me, but, hey if it makes them happy to do it...

Why do some people iron their underpants. :)

The worst thing about many of These lists are the errors.

Being a Dartmoor tor bagger I can safely say, only my list is correct.  ;)

I've asked my partner that question - apparently they are more comfy if smooth :-/

I can’t think of anything I would wear while walking that would need ironing. Under protest my work shirts and trousers do get ironed. After 15 minutes anything I wear looks like it hasn’t been ironed anyway.

Ultimately, it's for people to enjoy walking in their own way. If they want to log every mortal thing, that's fine. Personally, if I am walking a hill, I just want to be sure I get to the top, so it's nice to see a trig, if there is one. Otherwise, I don't care whether it's a Munro or a Nuttall or whatever. I have no idea how many Wainwrights I have done and couldn't care less.

I can see why people might like stamp collecting or watching birds but train spotting?

    Oh, and nothing gets ironed!

I was on Little Fell on the Warcop range during an authorised access.  The top is flat and the summit may or may not be marked by a small rock, opinions vary but is was fun to watch all the summit baggers going from spot to spot taking pictures of themselves without really knowing which photo was on the "official" summit.
Everything is ironed.  Nothing better than setting off in a crisply ironed walking shirt.  I still have to work out how to get decent knife edge creases in my Craghoppers though so I have settled for no wrinkles.

Well I'm intrigued, what is the 'Parent (MA) bit about and why is it on the High Street? Also why is the catchment in Kent?

Because if you had a pee on the summit it would end up in the River Kent  ;)

There are several different definitions for parent peak. This article is one of the simpler ones I found that explains it all. https://bivouac.com/PgxPg.asp?PgxId=280
