Tilberthwaite Quarries walk, including Cathedral Cave      05/07/2020

A short walk from the car park at Tilberthwaite car park - or should I say two walks. Firstly we explored the quarries above the car park, south of Yewdale Beck, and then crossed the footbridge over onto the north bank and walked around the rim of the chasm of Tilbergwaite Gill. We broke out into more open country and returned to the car through the quarries.

Our route on VIEWRANGER

Tilberthwaite

Inside the quarry

Yewdale Beck bridge

The valley above - a well built footbridge and a small level

Venturing underground - the small copper mine level didn't go very far

Looking down on the Tilberthwaite valley, the Eastern Fells beyond

After a picnic lunch at the car we headed north along a byway to Cathedral Cave. We branched off north eastwards on an indistinct public footpath, but this petered out as we descended into Little Landale, and in the end we had to climb a barbed wire fence and a wall to get on the main track running down the south side of the valley.

Bog Asphodel

Little Langdale Tarn

Cathedral Cave was a little way to the east, and was pretty spectacular. It is possible to enter without torches, and emerge into an open cast chasm through another tunnel, from where it was possible to scramble out into the woodland above.

We returned via a bridleway to the east of the quarries, a pleasant mile or so through woodlands and past more disused quarries.

Lovely Richard, pleased that you managed to get out after all the rain.
Love the first pic and the Tliberthwaite/Eastern Fells one.

Great pics from a very interesting corner of the Lakes O0
The drops into those quarries on the left hand side of the path always set my legs wobbling  ;)

Thanks Ridge. We got caught in a shower as we descended into Little Langdale, but had a few glimpses of the sun too. Quite windy, mind you, it would have been tough going up on the fells.

Thanks Karl. It is a very interesting corner, one that I have overlooked up to now in my eagerness to get onto the higher fells. Looks as if there are plenty more quarries and mines to explore - I'll be back.

Did you manage to get out for your wild camp?

No April and Beefy chickened out  :D

We decided to rearrange for better weather.
As I'd bought my ticket I went up on Friday with my gear just to see if the weather was as bad as forecast which it was so I walked from Windermere up to kentmere then back to the train at staveley getting very wet on the way. :)

Looks like an interesting area to walk, enjoyed viewing your photos.

Thanks for showing your route, must give it a go one day.

I must admit to doing very little walking in the Lake District, one of the few occasions was up a hill to view Osprey,....walked around the beautiful Holehird Gardens numerous times!

Nice pics Richard  O0 It is nice around those quarries  :)

Weird weather here yesterday, very warm sun with a freezing cold wind, also hailstones along with some torrential rain in north east Cumbria  :) As Karl (sort of) says, the weather scuppered our wild camping plans  :(

A pleasure. But if following my route, ignore the corner that I cut off as described in the Viewranger route details - better to stick to the easy byway to get down into Little Langdale rather than have to scale barbed wire fences and walls! It is a good area, up until now I have not walked in this corner myself - full of interest. :)

Thanks April  - yeah the weather was pretty rough on Saturday, but improved a lot yesterday, hence the lower level wander. The wind was gusting strongly at times as we climbed a bit higher - must have been tough going up on the high fells.

Better luck next weekend!  :)
