Title: Msr extreme shield I'm not impressed
Post by: beefy on 23:35:14, 11/07/19
Just been reading up on the new msr hubba hubba tents, they introduced their extreme shield to prolong the tents ability to remain waterproof,  but you need to seam seal it yourself.  :o  RRP £490.00  :o
Are you kidding msr...  :(

We've been very happy with our msr elixir, however, I might be looking elsewhere for our next tent

"The Hubba Hubba Shield is not supplied with the seams already taped, so for countries where there’s likely to be heavy rain, or light rain for extended periods, the Hubba Hubba Shield will need to have the seams sealed to prevent water ingress through the stitches of the seams."

Utterly ludicrous  :o

Lol. Is there really a market for 500 quid tents that can’t keep a bit of water out?

The 'blurb' even goes as far to say that it is not ideal for the UK and :

If you don’t live in a hot country where you store your tent in very warm conditions and you do go camping and trekking in wet areas, but don’t want to get involved with taping your own seams, then you might consider the ‘best selling’ MSR Hubba Hubba Nx. which stores perfectly in UK conditions and is 100% waterproof straight out of the box, even in very heavy rain and foul winter conditions. (Found in our MSR tent department or at the bottom of this page)

They are still going to be making the "normal" version for the UK market. Not sure what the purpose of the extreme shield version is if it isn't waterproof out of the box. Why bother buying it, wherever you live/camp?  :-\

I noticed this and didn't see the point either. Far better to recommence making the Hubba HP, a somewhat tougher version of the NX better suited to the UK with a lower cut fly and higher proportion of solid nylon but, like so many good things you find, they stop making them.

You can also buy the "4-Season" inner for the Hubba-Hubba which is about 80% 'solid' walls with a small area of 'net' vents.

... but you need to seam seal it yourself.

I just found a review (https://www.switchbacktravel.com/reviews/msr-hubba-hubba-nx-tent) that says:-

Quote
It’s worth noting that a new stitching style means that MSR has done away with seam taping, but in our experience, there were no areas of weakness.

No, I wouldn't trust it either.

Do you have a link for that?. Despite diligent searching I can't find it.

I am struggling to find the MSR version.

However here is the Chinese 'copy' of it at £50 must be worth a try ?

The link shows both the 3-season and the 4-season variants.

Add (sew) a 'sod-cloth' onto the bottom of the existing fly-sheet and you have the 4-season snow-skirts
You could even have them as 'zip-on' so you can use it as a 3 or a 4-season flysheet.

Thanks for the link, looks interesting. I've no experience with the likes of AliExpress.

I still cannot find an 'original MSR' version of the 4-seasons inner.

I have had great success and service using Ali-Express. I was a little reluctant to start with but if you have time to wait (some bits are in European warehouses) I've had every order turn up, and being 'new' everything is as described. - better than my Ebay history.

I have found the suppliers very helpful and answers questions (typically 'what weight is it') but you do need to make the question specific (what weight is it without poles and pegs ? for example)

To quote an oft used phrase "no connection, just a satisfied customer".

I'm also tempted with this :

Looks ideal for an extended stay, bike store, etc etc.

OK I give up, I cannot find the MSR equivalent of the 4-season Inner for the Hubba Hubba.

What I have found is that MSR have in the last year or two modified their inner tents so that there is now approximately 50/50 mesh and 'solid' walls.

Pictures of both old & new.

The Chinese copy I have has copied the latest designs and has the 50/50 mesh / solid walls.

There is supposedly much less draught and less 'splash back' from rain, or powdered snow getting into the main tent.

Some pics of my Chinese version (complete tent cost £75 vs MSR Hubba Hubba at £399)

About 50% mesh, keeps the draughts out.

Thanks for the pictures, they prompted me to investigate these purchase channels further.
Having browsed the sites, I see some of the AliExpress ones on Amazon storefronts. There is a large selection of tents I've never heard of, much to think about there.
Our Big Agnes tents are perfect for a very large proportion of the year but maybe too much mesh for winter. Terra Nova seem to get the proportion perfect in, for example, my Lasercomp - a triangle at each pointy end and half the side door. The MSR Access 1 winter tent goes much too far the other way, just a tiny triangle at the top and the condensation is horrendous.

They have traded the seem sealing for stronger stitching on a lightweight material.  They are in a battle in the USA with Big Agnes and the smaller specialist companies (zPacks, etc) for the lucrative lightweight market.  Lighter is better in many peoples eyes.

The difference in weight between the MSR Hubba Hubba NX and the new Extreme Shield version is only 24g so I'm not sure it was about weight saving?

MSR already have other tents that are much lighter that can compete with the BA and Zpacks tents - all with mesh inners, the Freelite and Carbon Reflex.

Ridiculous.

Who wants to sleep in a £500 drip coffin?  :D
