Stolen Things
« on: 08:20:09, 27/05/08 »
Hi all

Just wondering if anyone knows the where abouts of a yellow Osprey Exposure 50 Rucksack STOLEN from Castle Crag of Tiermain in Thirlmere yesterday (26th May) between 4 and 6 while Climbing on Zig Zag. I thought I'd post here in case anyone knows or hears of anyone selling these things as the rucksack is quite a rare(ish) one

It contained various items of Climbing Equipment, 4/5 Screw Gates, some quick draws, Full set of Hexes, Black North Face Gilet body warmer thing, Some T-shirts, Some cash, My Master card, Debit card and Driving License (All reported stolen and cancelled) A Silver Samsung G800 Mobile Phone (stopped and locked but I'm massively keen to get this back!) and various items of clothing, Smart Wool
mountaineering socks... and a couple of t-shirts.

Reward for its safe return. Please call with any information if you saw the person(s) who knicked it, leave a message at this number please - 01744 631 850 or call 017687 72005 and leave a mesage also. If anyone finds it abandoned or any of the contents could you drop them into Derwent Hill OCE in Portinscale, Keswick and leave your contact details as there is a small reward for finding it.

Many Thanks
Mike Roughley

Luckily I was climbing and had the ropes, harness, shoes, helmet and most importantly most of my rack with me! Just a note to folks, keep an eye on everything and don't leave anything in your cars either when parked up!

Maybe this should be warning to a lot of us who, whilst not actual rock climbers, often leave a heavy pack behind a rock to make a lightweight dash to a peak or viewpoint that is slightly off our proposed route.
It must be tea time by now

Keep checking on ebay, its where these things often end up.You also have to realise that climbing equipment isn't that easy to off load, not like a TV or camera, its a specialist item the crims can't sell to their usual buyers.

Reading through the rest of your post there is the chance they will dump the climbing kit and make use of the driving licence and credit card. These items are very popular in the asylum community, even if they are cancelled.

There's just one or two real b'stards out there..... I  shouldnt be to surprised if the cops have a shortlist of likely thieves who do this kind of thing.

I'm just posting in sympathy, really.....

Kretha, those cards, licence and mobile would have been transferred to my pockets, they most definitely would not have stayed behind in my pack.   First time I've heard of stuff being taken on the hill, though. Was it far from "civilisation"?  I mean, if it was a fair walk from anywhere, I would assume it must have been another walker or climber, rather than some opportunist thief hanging around near a car park.

I agree with tonyk, the rest of your gear will probably be dumped somewhere. Who is going to risk being seen with someone else's yellow rucksack? I came across some clothing and personal items (keys etc) dumped over a wall in Snowdonia a few years ago, it had obviously been stolen, there was nothing of any value there.  (I put it all in a plastic bag and left it with an explanatory note on the doorstep of the local part-time police station. Was never contacted.)

Mike Knipe, I'm glad you've got such confidence in the police, I hope it makes you sleep easier at night. If the Lakes ones are anything like as useless as the ones in my part of the world, they probably couldn't care less, in spite of what they claim publicly.

We went to the Lakes this weekend gone.  Round Langdale area went to the pub, called the Wainwright pub.  And was seating on one of the tables outside.....  When I saw a phone which looked so much like my partners  work phone.  When he said no I handed it in at the bar with a lighter, when two girls asked if they could sit next to us one said I lost me lighter I clicked to whether it was there's, so I mentioned it to her.  When she looked in her pocket she realised it was her phone, thank us and recovered it from the bar!!!!

The only thing I tried to do was to phone one off the people listed on the phone but soon realised that no signal. This is the thing we have to many pockets on jackets, coats, pants etc etc.  And carry to much gear all things we need but than you don't realise what you're missing!!! I always miss place me gear "dizzy head", but always got most stuff back.  I really hope you get your stuff back I know someone who test gear for living who lost a backpack while testing it, the very same one as you're, he said it was rare and was seeing how it stood upto the test, left by the car!!! Unsure if he every got his back. E-bay the best bet.  Unsure again on how fast these sell on e-bay as never go on. Hope you find it???

Its not that unusual to get stuff stolen from car parks and we had a spate of kit thieving in West Yorks/Peak District when I lived there in the eighties. Castle Rock of Triermain is close to the road but if you look at the MBA site, there's stuff being stolen from quite remote bothies.  Its predictable that there'd be gear laying about at the bottom of a crag like this and I wouldnt be surprised if whoever did it had also been to a few other crags during the same day  and walked off with other people's kit.  The more they doi it, the more likely they are to get caught.
Ive no problem with our local plods or the ones in Cumbria - many of them work there because they're walkers and climbers and I think they do what they can. The ones I know personally are always keen to nick a thief. I do understand, though that in some places, the cops dont rate very highly for reacting as you'd want them to do - or at all.
Incidentally, in the eighties, some climbers laid a trap for a gear thief in the Peak and he got quite badly injured whilst resisting arrest - he even attacked one bloke's boot with his groin, apparently...  couldn't condone that sort of thing, obviously....

Probably those peskie DoE kids up to mischief! Are you sure some dozey twonk hasn't come by it and thought it to be abandoned and handed it in somewhere?

I wouldn't expect much from the police to be honest with you. I had my car broken into and some things stolen a few years back and called the police. An officer turned up later that same day (they at least managed that much back then) who took a look at my car, asked a few questions then told me that basically there was no point in recording the crime. That's one less reported crime I guess so the government really are tackling crime! Never phoned the police for anything since.
