SATMAP Active 12
« on: 11:02:17, 29/11/13 »
Having owned a SATMAP Active 10 for a number of years and always been very pleased with it, I was really looking forward to finding out the details of the rumored Active 12. But, having finally seen a press release for it, I have to admit I am somewhat disappointed.
according to the PR, it was due to be on sale on the 1st November 2013)

Apart from a higher resolution screen, bluetooth, and a barometric altimeter, (oh and orange buttons, and a few software bells and whistles for geo-cachers) it seems to be much the same as the Active 10.

According to the PR it uses the same SifStarIII chip set as the Active 10, so no improvement in the Time to First Fix or accuracy, and no GLONASS or GALILEO compatibility.

Personally I would like to have seen an increase in the screen size (to 4.7" like many of the smart phones?) and GLONASS/GALILEO compatibility ahead of bluetooth and orange buttons.

I can't help thinking that Satmap are in serious danger of losing their place as market leader and being left trailing behind by the competition.

Anyone have any more info  or news??????

Replying, years later, to this post. Have to agree with much of what the OP feared, except to say that the upgrade made the Active 12 into what the device should have been all along. Quite happy with it and still use mine as my day to day navigation tool.

For anyone interested I got an email today from SATMAP:-
"The popular Active 10 trade-in offer is back!
Any Active 10 users looking to upgrade to the Active 12 are eligible for an up to £100* trade-in discount for their old device!
This trade in discount can be applied to any brand new Active 12** device or bundle."

I think the trade-in offer is tempting, especially for anyone who already owns Satmap proprietary map cards that suit them. Any accessories, like the bike mount, the LiPo caddy, screen protectors / Proshield silicon cover (itself on offer at the mo' for £20) and so on, can be retained as the case itself is identical across both models.
Their in-house online map tool, Xpedition 2, is much more practical than the old, Silverlight based, Xped. mk1, although in typical Satmap style, is slightly undeveloped and not without its frustrations!

Slogger posting.Very cunning of Satmap. A way of getting rid of their Active 12 stock, now that the active 20 is out. https://www.satmap.com/active-20-solo.html

I have had the Active 10 for some time now and very happy with it.
I run with the 'Platinum' SD cards giving 1:10k, 1:25k, & 1:50k for the whole country.

Looking at the spec for the '12' I don't see anything that it gives me that I actually need.
The '20' looks good, but again, for the cost I don't see any personal gain in changing / upgrading.

I'd recommend (and have done many times) the Active 10 to anyone.

I am also very happy with my active 10+. The active 20 takes micro SD cards, so any cards for earlier models wont fit although they have an option to replace them with micro cards (at a cost).

Hi Dav, I'm really happy with my Satmap Active  too :-)  May I invite you to tell me and other Satmap users your Top Fave Features, Tips & Tricks?  (And please, all non Satmap Active users, we know there are tons of other lovely GPS devices out there and we're really pleased that you like yours, but can we keep this thread free of 101 Reasons Why The Satmap Active Sucks comments?!)
