Recommend Garmin Topo Maps
« on: 15:14:26, 21/02/18 »
Hi,
I have just treated myself to a garmin gpsmap 64s and am in the market for more detailed UK hiking mapping. Am I best sticking to Garmin products or is there a 3 party product?

There are numerous third party maps, mostly free.  Try googling OSM maps for Garmin.  When I'm home I'll give you a link to my favourites that I've used over many years, I no longer take paper maps with me.

Edit:

Talkytoaster website offers superb mapping for Garmin. The free maps are very very good and the pay ones are even better.
It's all uphill from here.

I've used TalkyToaster maps, his free one and the paid for one, before he started charging for it. They are both based on OSM like all OSM mapping.  The ones I've posted links to above are better in my view than either of his.

I must be a muppet, I am trying, unsuccessfully to install the top mapset covering all the UK. Admittedly I have just treated myself to a mac so I am trying to use two new pieces of kit and am succeeding in getting frustrated.

Did you read through the instructions applying to Garmin?  Where are you stuck?

I did. I have installed an SD card, named it Garmin tried dragging the .img files into it.

I think I have just realised what I have, or more importantly haven't done, I haven't created a folder called Garmin. I am at work, trying to remember the steps I did last night so I may be flannelling. I will have to have another look tonight.

That'll be the issue.  The .img file needs to be in a folder named Garmin :)
