Fleetwith Pike Brandreth and Haystacks
« on: 20:43:03, 17/02/08 »
As the dawg said in The Fleece last night - everybody and his dog will be in the Lake District on Sunday - it being such nice weather and all that.
So thats where we went.
Weardale was minus 6 degrees, Penrith was minus two, and on top of Fleetwith Pike, it was positively tropical. All my winter stuff came off and I was in shirt sleeves all day.
We'd climbed by the fun, marginally scrambly ridge which points at Gatesgarth - the ridge with the white cross at the bottom where somebody fell off!. The last time I climbed this ridge, I nearly got blown off it, and the rocks were greasy. Today was completely different - warm sun, no wind and improving views.
Ater Fleetwith, we mooched across to Grey Knotts and Brandreth where a little lad told me that the dawg was the 22nd dawg he'd seen that day. Seems a lot of dawgs. Later on he counted the dawg again, and by then he was up to 27.  Obviously going to be a chartered accoutant, specialising in vets.
It seemed to be a day for people taking either their Knines or their kids out for a bit of a hike - laods of each everywhere - and helicopters, apparently doing joy rides.
After lunch on Brandreth summit, we tootled off down the hill to locate Green Crag - my new bag for the day. Its just next to Blackbeck Tarn at Haystacks and the top is gained by an easy scramble. Well worth it too for the situation and the views.
Haystacks followed then a return to Gatesgarth and it's ice cream van.
Only 7 or so miles , but 2900+ feet of ascent, and a slight tan. 8)

Some kind of happiness is measured out in miles
