« on: 18:00:57, 21/02/10 »
Hi Everyone

I am just starting out at walking and looking at starting walking in the Yorkshire Dales but as I haven't done anything before I am looking for the best books or guides to buy for this area.

Thankyou in advance for your help  :)

Hi yorksgal. Personally I wouldn't buy a book on walking. I get books out of the library, study the places and descriptions, then buy a map of the area, and make up my own walk. You could always photocopy the relevant page out of the book to take it with you. I have tried following walks solely from books, but it's hopeless without a map. Ilona

I wouldnt buy any books yet, there is lots of info on here  ;)

Try this link first

http://www.walkingenglishman.com/dales.htm

lots of ideas on there

Depends how far you looking to do. I have a series of 3 books by a guy called jack keighley, most of the walks are 5 - 7 miles long. A few of us on here now, looks like some meets will soon happen, once you got 25 posts you can see em  O0

If you let me know where you want to walk and how far I mayhave some ideas too. You can go on bikehike or wheresthepath and upload walks others have done, then print em off - no need to get the map...

Glad to help!

The page here:
http://www.cicerone.co.uk/author/detail.cfm/author/1247/name/keighley--jack

comes up with 9 books, The first one is pretty damned good, it is 50 of Jack Keighley s best - i have the 3 books of 30 he culled them from. Not all long and average about 7 miles I think, so if you want a longer walk, jsut get the map out or go here

http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm

or here

http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php

and add a bit on. But the Jack Keighley walk book is a great read, and done in pen and ink like the Wainwrights on the Lakes. An ideal birthday gift to yourself even if its not your birthday  O0   Id buy it for you but I ve lived in Yorkshire too long  ;D
