Atmospheric day on Slieve Lamagan
« on: 13:13:51, 03/09/17 »
Saturday's walk saw me take in one of the seven sevens, Slieve Lamagan. Lamagan is the sixth highest in the Mournes and occupies a central location in the eastern Mournes sandwiched between Binnian and Donard. Starting from Carrick Little I followed a minor road and good track to Ben Crom reservoir. It was a long walk in, about 4km. Visibility was great in the valley and as I started to make the ascent of Lamagan I noticed cloud rolling in from the Irish Sea :( . Binnian's south tor became clagged in and as I reached the summit, I was engulfed in thick cloud. A gust of wind forced a parting of cloud as views of the central Mournes opened up. I had thought of doing the Annalong horseshoe but the cloud just wouldn't shift on Upper Cove. So, I decided to retrace my steps to the car park. It is the second time this year I've summited Lamagan to have limited views. Hope that changes soon. Total distance was approximately 12km.

Thanks Ridge; sometimes I've had to climb certain mountains four or five times before I get a clear day!

Cracking photos, Henry.  O0

The drift of cloud across the tops might block out some of those beautiful views but on the flip-side it does make for really atmospheric pictures. Looks like you had a great day's walking.

Thanks adalard, beefy and April :)  Upon further reflection I suppose a partial view is better than no view at all and having a plan B is always a good thing :)  Hopefully Dow crag this week-end but knowing my luck it'll probably be Holme fell or if its really pouring it down, the walk could be from the Queens hotel in Ambleside to Ambleside cinema or watching the football in the Ambleside Tavern ;D ;D ;D ;D  Its has happened before! ;D

Quality pics as always Henry. If next week sees the monsoon season I might be occupying your seat in the Ambleside Tavern.  Hope not!

Hi All, just to advise that I did end up briefly in the Ambleside Tavern last Sunday :(  after walking part of the CW from Monk Coniston to Skelwith Bridge. :)  It rained heavily last Sunday. Waterproofs came in handy :)  Thankfully I had a good walk the day before from Grasmere to ODG. O0
