Some lovely photos of a delightful neglected area, Dave. Sloe Brae Gill looks like a good way to get on the hill.

Hell Gill looks fascinating; I find myself drawn to such places. I believe it makes a fine if wet scramble, almost like caving.

Lovely photos. I've been wanting to explore this area a bit more for a while, and your TR has whetted the appetite!

I've been over it round it and across it but never in it.  Never heard of anyone doing it either.
There are some superb walks in that area though.  It is also the scene of the Kirkby Stephen Yomp which I have taken part in a couple of times.  The Yomp starts in KS, goes up the ridge over Wild Boar and Swarth Fells then crosses the valley to go past Hell Gill and up onto Mallerstang Edge, across Birkdale to the Nine Standards and back to KS.  The next Yomp is in early June - https://www.yomp.org/

What a fabulous route and great TR/photos, thanks Dave.
The view up Hell Gill is quite something - the rocks on the left (just after the first few that are pale coloured) look like a squashed face with flattened nose and tightly shut eyes: like a newly born child..... spooky !

Only a hill but all of life to me, up there between the sunset and the sea.
