Longshaw Estate
« on: 20:20:08, 13/10/10 »
Well yet again, BBC weather gets it completely wrong - just how can they get it so wrong, so often. I can understand it when forecasting days in advance, but how often do you check the weather forecast at night, then the next day it's completely different  >:(

Yesterday in the Sheffield area they forecast grey cloud all day - it was a nice sunny day. For today, they also forecast grey cloud all day - well they not only got it wrong with cloud colour, there wasn't even a cloud in the sky!!!

Anyway...

We had planned to drive out to Castleton, go up Lose Hill, along the Great Ridge to Mam Tor and back to Castelton via Winnats Pass - a steady 6 or so miles with a decent ascent. However, my wife wasn't feeling 100% and the forecast was for dull weather so we ditched the idea. When we saw that the weather was rather better than expected, we decided to go on a steady flattish walk so headed for the Longshaw Estate ( http://peakdistrict.nationaltrust.org.uk/longshaw ) between Sheffield and Hathersage.

We had a lovely 2hr stroll around parts of the estate (you could spend all day going around it all - it's that big), had a large Hot Chocolate in the impressive visitor centre and then a 3-course lunchtime menu meal at the Fox House ( http://www.vintageinn.co.uk/thefoxhouselongshaw/ ) before heading back across rush-hour Sheffield to return home.

For anyone who doesn't know the Estate, and just fancies a steady stroll with only a few short inclines then it's well worth a few hours of your time, and the lunchtime meal is well worth it after your walk. Great company also makes it worthwhile...
