We did a local walk on Sunday, the ten minute bus ride, catching the bus without having to walk 3 miles into town was too appealing! We got the bus to Hayton Lane End and we wanted to visit Castle Carrock, a village we'd wanted to go to for a while.
Beefy on the way to Tootop Woods
The snow melt has left a muddy mess
We also had to fight through the gorse that has overgrown the footpath near the quarry...ouch!
You get allsorts of wildlife in Tootop Woods
The fells from near Greenwell
Greenwell is a lovely little hamlet, I didn't take any photos but we will be back to walk through there again, we always stopped just short of it near the river for our lunch.
Looking back along the bridleway
It was sunny and warm today, a hint that spring is on the way
Beefy chatting to one of the locals
Castle Carrock from the bridleway
There was a bit of snow about here and there.
Talkin Fell from near Castle Carrock
Soggy bridleway here due to the snow melt
Castle Carrock was a really nice village with lovely houses, very pretty. We walked toward Geltsdale but stopped for our lunch before we dropped down to the valley
Our lunch stop view
Talkin Fell and the road down to Geltsdale
It was colder here with the easterly wind blowing but the scenery was stunning
The river Gelt at Low Hynam
We crossed the bridge and started ascending the other side of the valley to get to Talkin village
We had to climb over the gate
The snow is very deep here, there are people who live in this valley, we wondered how long they were snowed in during last weeks snow.
Castle Carrock Fell
On the bridleway to Talkin Head Farm
It was a glorious day in the sunshine, it was much warmer on this side of the valley
The river Gelt in Gelt Woods
What a great walk this was but we were tired when we got to the bus stop. Our route was Hayton Lane End - Tootop Woods - Greenwell - Castle Carrock - Jockey Shield - Geltsdale - Talkin Head Farm - Talkin - Middle Gelt Bridge - Low Gelt Bridge - Hayton Lane End. 16.9km with 200m ascent. We will be back to explore the walks around Castle Carrock.
