Anyone had their boots resoled?
« on: 20:27:06, 01/11/10 »
After enduring 2 year's worth of rock kicking in Snowdonia, my Scarpa SLs are looking slightly the worse for wear. The leather is scuffed to bu99ery, but still buffs up well and the boots are still waterproof. However, the soles have worn down quite a bit and I am sure they aren't as grippy as they used to be. The rubber toe bumper has also parted company with the leather and the gap between the two soon fills up with [censored]. Do I spring for a shiny new pair of boots or is it worth getting them resoled (at an approx. cost of 60 quid)? Has anyone gone down the resoling route? Did your boots maintain their waterproofing afterwards? Ta.

My sister had her beloved old Raichle boots resoled after about a million miles and she was well chuffed with the results, a year later she sustained a huge crack in the upper however, thus rendering them knackered! ::)
take it easy...but take it

Tracey :)

I just been contacted by Sunny.  :)

To talk about Scarpa boots!  :) :)

I've got three pairs of Scarpa Mantas, two older and one fairly new.

Both older pairs have been resoled and repaired  in the past by LSR, (Lancashire Sports Repairs). With post etc that worked out at about £70 per pair. And I got back totally worn in boots that gave me as much use again as they did when they were new. No probs at all.

That was two or three years ago.

I think since then LSR have changed owners? (Others may know if this is actually the case).

Both those pairs have been back recently to LSR for the same treatment, (resole and repair).

Not good this time. One pair had been left with a sticky out bit of leather where the inside of the heel had been repaired. Got an immediate blister.

The other pair were much, much tighter than when I sent them. Got a bruised toe the first time I wore them. Am stretching them at present but they will need a sort of wearing in again before they are fit for long walks.

Thought long and hard about sending both pairs back to be re done. May still do that if I can't sort them myself very soon. But bothered at what may happen to them if I do! As well as all the aggro of packing them and the postage cost again.

In short my policy of keeping my Mantas going by resole and repair is under review at present.

On balance I think I will probably go the route of buying new. And spending more time trying on boots to get a pair of Mantas that fit really well, and limit the amount of time needed to wear them in.

I had two pairs of Manta's resoled.  I gave them both away, they never fitted properly again.

Boots aren't really all that expensive, even the expensive ones, so once they have had it I now replace them.

This thread is quite timely! We were just on the verge of sending a pair back to be done, having had a number of pairs of boots repaired/resoled by LSR very successfully in the past. A box and wrapping paper are on the kitchen floor waiting to be done - only a quick check on here had delayed us!

Your post has me slightly worried now. I think we will hold on for a bit and give it some thought. £60 - £70 is good if you get a beautiful job done (as in the past) but a lot of money if you don't - almost enough to buy a new pair.  :(

We'll give it some thought .....

That is interesting Bill.

Until my recent experience I wasn't aware that re soling a boot could make it almost unwearable afterwards. I wonder if that is because the wrong size sole unit is used, or the way it is forced onto the lower part of the boot.

But having had it happen to me with two boots, and now with your experience I think I am decided to go the new boot route in future. Just gotta be very careful to get  a pair that don't need lots of wearing in. My newest Mantas took around 500 miles to get ok. But now they are superb.

My hiking boot and climbing shoes used to get resoled by cheshire shoe repairs in Warrington who were specialists and did as good a job as could be expected.

Hiking boots usually came out pretty much fine but needed a period of settling in, not just because of the stiffness of the new sole unit but also because the camber of the footbed/insole relative to the outsole had changed.

Climbing shoes, being very fit-sensitive, were never the same again, and once re-soled were used for climbing indoors on training routes only.

Not sure what they're like now. The guy's name was Ian, I recall.

Nowadays I don't bother. Not only does the outsole get trashed on my boots but the lacing systems, the uppers, and especially the linings get trashed too. I just buy new ones, put them on and go. Never seem to have breaking-in problems as long as the fit is correct to start with.

Talking to One F in Foreigner on the last meet up.
I was telling him my Mendail Nepal Pro boots were on there way out.

He told me to get them resoled. He said to go to the local cobbler.

So thats what i did. I went to the one in Keighley market. Cost of repair for new soles £35.

He has done a very, very good job. No complaints so far.

Jim.

Hello guess who,

I hope that you do not mind me asking, what size do you take in your Nepal Pros?
Reason that I am asking is that I have a pair of these that are just too small, bought them years ago before the kids came and haven't had much use out of them, they are almost brand new. They are a size 7.
Good boot, just too nipit, but I've learned alot since I bought these with regards to getting a proper fit.

Hi Alex.

I am a size 9. Which is a shame, i would have taken them of you for the right price.

I love the boots, best ones i have ever bought. Thats the main reason for getting them resoled.

Pity that they are too small. I was thinking that my daughter could use them when she got to that size, but they are a hefty boot and she is used to lighter fabric ones.

They are available if anyone is interested, probably best suit a 6 1/2 size foot best, might be too big for a 6. You are right that they are a good boot, although even if they fitted me for what I do, which isn't much at the moment, they are probably a bit too stiff. Great ankle support and the construction is top notch.

I have just had my venerable Raichle boots resoled by Ian at Cheshire Shoe repairs.

He has done a fantastic job and my boots look and feel like new and strongly recommend this firm.

I had made a poor attempt at sorting them myself leaving lots of evostick residues, but Ian did a grand job despite my amateur bodging.

Their standard charge is £55 and £20 for midsole replacement. That includes postage back to the client!  I was so impressed I paid a wee bit

more than the invoice. As a Scotsman, that should tell you how much I liked this firm. They are on Google
