It was a day walk for us on Saturday, it was going to fall close to freezing or below on the fells with a strong wind overnight, not ideal conditions to camp in. We got the Buttermere bus to Catbells bus stop and started walking up toward Little Town. We had blue sky and sunshine but it was bitterly cold and the wind from the north made it even more uncomfortable. The visibility was great though and a good day for taking photos.

Looking back at Skiddaw

Causey Pike

Hindscarth, Robinson and Ard Crags

We had planned to go over the Ard Crags ridge but the wind might have been too strong for comfort (going soft in our old age I think!) so we changed the walk and walked the whole length of the Newlands Valley to the col below Dale Head

Waterfall on Newlands Beck

There were patches of ice here and there on the way up, winter has arrived.

Great views to the east on the way down by Rigghead Quarries

Borrowdale from the descent

We stopped for some lunch near the beck sitting in the sunshine.

Rosthwaite Fell and Glaramara

It was a make it up as you go walk today. When we got to the Grange to Seatoller bridleway we left it to go down to New Bridge and walk to Stonethwaite. We didn't cross the bridge, we walked along the path to Longthwaite.

Stepping Stones, we didn't go over these either!

Looking back at Castle Crag and High Spy

Eagle Crag from Stonethwaite

We only had five minutes to wait for the bus. A great walk and a taste of winter. The route was Catbells bus stop - Little Town - Wilson's Bield - Rigghead Quarries - Lingy Bank - Longthwaite - Stonethwaite. 12km with 584m ascent.

Great photo.
Really clear but I guess that is because it was so cold.

I have to agree with what has already been said about the Newlands Valley looking stunning.  The visibility was epic last Saturday too
